Xiaomi may be a little behind the foldable device trend but the company isn’t lagging behind with its state of the art hardware, Let us meet the new Xiaomi Mi Mix Fold. The new foldable smartphone comes with a lot of innovative features that one could find on any foldable devices out there but cheaper.

Ok, they look familiar, I know, but Xiaomi has its own interesting features and ideas about the concept phone that with its foldable screen, you can actually may good use of the large display for productivity or entertainment while maintaining a smaller profile at most times.

The devices like where its inspirations got two displays, one that is fixed on the outside while the main is folded in. The outer display is a 6.52-inch AMOLED panel with a resolution of 840×2520 pixels and having a wide aspect ratio of 27:9. It comes with 90Hz refresh rate couple with 180Hz touch sampling rate that supports HDR10+ and Dolby Vision.

The main internal display as unfolded measures 8.01-inch and its an OLED panel with a 4:3 aspect ratio, This one yet is Xiaomi’s largest display on its smartphone lineup and that the company even claims it as the largest in any foldable devices in the market.

With its tablet-sized display, Xiaomi have enabled Android’s desktop mode on it which becomes more useful with multiple resizable windows that could work on multiple compatible apps at once like we normally do on laptops and desktop computers.

While the display looks impressive, you’d be even more impressed with the Mi Mix cameras as the device uses the world’s first Liquid Lens technology in a telephoto lens. The technology uses a flexible film filled with transparent liquid that changes its shape through a precision motor. The lens offers up to 3x optical zoom and work as a macro lens as well with an 8 Megapixel sensor behind it.

The main sensor here is a 108 Megapixel 1/1.52″ Samsung ISOCELL HM2 sensor that supports 9-in-1 pixel binning technology for 2.1µm pixels. Unfortunately though is that it lacks OIS and we just can’t understand why Xiaomi left out such important feature for the main camera, however, this should be at least augmented through EIS but hardware-based image stabilization could have been better. Then there’s also a 13 Megapixel camera on it with a an Ultra Wide angle 123-degree field of view lens.

What powers the new Mi Mix Fold is the Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 chip with either 12GB or 16GB of LPDDR5 RAM and storage between 256GB or 512GB of UFS 3.1. To help with image processing, Xiaomi have developed an in-house image processor called the Surge C1 and uses the 3A Algorithm – Auto Focus, Auto Exposure and Auto White Balance with power efficiency,

The device comes with a dual batteries with 2,460mAh on each power pack for a total of 5,020mAh. It supports 67W fast charging which Xiaomi claims a battery full in less than 40 minutes. What’s lacking here is wireless charging and being a first generation build, we are going to forgive them for this.

Feature-wise, the new Mi Mix comes with a Butterfly-type cooling system that uses a large vapor chamber, thermal gel and multiple layers of graphite sheets. This cooling feature does not only help cooldown its chipset but also for all other internal components like its 5G antenna and battery packs.

The device also includes a quad-speaker setup tuned by Harman Kardon. The speakers comes with a large 1.34cc equivalent chambers and are driven by 15V amps. It also has a Xiaomi-developed 3D Spacial Audio Algorithm for an immersive audio experience.

As the devices folds and unfolds, Xiaomi have developed a U-shaped hinge that is 27% lighter than those from other foldable devices in the market plus Xiaomi subjected the Mi Mix Fold to 1 million bends during its reliability testing to ensure its durability and strength.

The new Xiaomi Mi Mix is now available for pre-order in China with the first back to hit store shelves on April 16 in two versions: Standard and Ceramic Special Edition, the former uses a Gorilla Glass Back with ceramic textures while the latter has a black Ceramic back with engravings and gold accents on the mid-frame and volume buttons.

Prices:

12GB/256GB = RMB 9,999 (US$ 1,523)

12GB/512GB = RMB 10,099 (US$ 1,538)

16GB/512GB = RMB 12,999 (US$ 1,980)
