Xiaomi formally unveiled their new sub-brand the Pocophone that debuts the new POCO F1 smartphone in India. As surprising as it is, the new Xiaomi handset packed high-end specs with unexpectedly low price. It comes with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 as its heart and is just one and only device in the market with such power with prices starting at just below $300.

What makes it cheaper than most flagships you may ask. Well, Xiaomi made the POCO F1 from Polycarbonate material with a unibody design, something that we seldom come up with today’s proliferation of metal and glass based high-end devices. It’s not a bad thing for the device actually as Polycarbonate proved its durability and longevity long before metallic device went mainstream. This also means that the handset in some ways, felt more solid to use and as sturdy as you’d expect for a phone made in plastic given that Xiaomi gave the handset a 7-layer of color process to made each device stay in good shape and last longer against time.

The handset’s outer shell comes with these primary color options: Graphite Black, Steel Blue, and Rosso Red color variants plus a special Armoured Edition variant that uses actual Kevlar material on the back of the handset for better grip. Inside its unibody shell is a reinforced internal frame structure designed to make the handset more rigid with the inside fully protected. It also uses a unique LiquidCool technology designed to dissipate heat keeping the handset cool and always at its optimum performance.

The handset comes with a large 6.18-inch IPS LCD display and features a notch on top. It’s not just your usual Android display notch or some sort as it comes with actual practical use. Besides the front facing camera, the notch also houses the infrared sensor for its infrared-based facial recognition system and the earpiece which doubles as a second speaker for its dual loudspeaker setup. The display gives vibrant colors as expected for an IPS display with a Full-HD+ edge-to-edge panel.

As what we mentioned earlier, the handset is powered by the top of the line Snapdragon 845 chipset from Qualcomm and is paired with either 6GB or 8GB of RAM. Storage-wise, the new POCO F1 comes with either 64GB, 128GB or a 256GB of internal storage and is expandable with microSD cards of up to 256GB. It tops performance through a special LiquidCool technology to keep the device temperature at bay.

For imaging, the POCO F1 includes a 20 Megapixel front-facing camera for Selfies with an f/2.0 Aperture lens, besides the usual Selfies and Groupies, the handset also supports Facial Recognition technology with the help of an infrared sensor on the front. On the back, the handset has a dual imaging setup with a 12 Megapixel SONY IMX363 primary camera with dual-pixel technology and a secondary 5 Megapixel Samsung sensor for depth sensing. This dual camera setup is then supported by a single-tone LED flash to assist in low-light conditions and of course, there’s AI assist that detect different scenes and comes with predefined shooting modes and settings to make every subject to stand out.

Feature-wise, the new handset includes stereo speakers with one from the bottom for the high tones and the earpiece for the mid and lows. A 3.5mm audio jack is also present despite companies are ditching the old but reliable port. Then we have dual SIM support with 4G LTE connectivity, high-speed WiFi, Bluetooth 5.0, GPS.

The new POCO F1 boots Android 8.1 with a POCO-customized MIUI 9.5 user interface on top that called the MIUI for Poco. the interface is designed to be fast and responsive that takes full advantage of its hardware. Xiaomi is also said to bring MIUI 10 to the new device with Android 9.0 Pie in the next few months.

While these features that we’ve mentioned already is a perfect fit for any lifestyle, there’s one thing that not everyone is taking it more seriously at the moment and that’s the battery. Thankfully for the POCO F1, Xiaomi includes a 4000 mAh embedded powerpack on the unit and supports Qualcomm’s Quick Charge 3.0 technology which should easily charge the handset in no time.

The POCO F1 phone will be available in India on August 29th and will be launched in Jakarta Indonesia, Paris and Hong Kong on the 27th. Prices for each variant of the new device are as follows:

  • 6GB/64GB = INR20,999 ($300)
  • 6GB/128GB = INR23,999 ($345)
  • 8GB/256GB = INR28,999 ($415)
  • 8GB/256GB Armoured Edition = INR29,999 ($430)

From these prices ranges, Xiaomi shows the world, that flagship devices may not be priced aggressively as what many are doing at the moment. So if you are looking for a great device with flagship specs on the right budget, you won’t go wrong with the new POCO F1.
