After endless speculations and rumors, the new Mi Mix 2s from Xiaomi has finally becomes official. Unlike earlier reports, the Mi Mix 2s follows the same designed that the original Mi Mix 2 was renowned for, an almost bezel less design with a small lip at the bottom dominates the front of the handset and of course the upgrade it deserved with what most fans were clamouring of all this time, a dual camera system on the back and wireless charging.
As the handset follows the same design from its predecessor, it too is made from a full metal frame and a ceramic backing which is all premium in any sense and is one of the few devices in the market with the choice of material in its arsenal. What is a little disappointing though is that, Xiaomi still has no intention on bringing waterproofing into its lineup and the Mi Mix 2s does not mentioned any IP ratings for that, meaning, users still can’t bring their beloved device out in the rain.
What is really nice about the handset is its 5.99-inch display and its 18:9 Aspect ratio screen. It’s still an IPS Panel though but should make it more suitable for every task that it makes. It also has a Full-HD+ display, so users won’t have to worry about battery consumption at any point. One could have question why Xiaomi’s choice of a display doesn’t involved 2K or even 4K resolution when competition are gunning that route, however in the case with Full-HD+, battery consumption is one advantage of these displays and one should note than even other manufacturer devices, they’ve default their displays to full-HD+ with same aspect ratio in order to save battery life.
Another thing to point out with the Mi Mix 2s is the obvious absence of a notch on the display, unlike everyone else, Xiaomi with the Mi Mix 2s stick to the tried and tested notchless design but that also give users a small bezel at the bottom to house its 5 Megapixel front-facing camera. Xiaomi could have made the Mi Mix 2s an all display front and just made a little cut out for the camera but it didn’t and we think that’s a good thing.
The original Mi Mix 2 came with a single camera sensor on the back where fans were fairly disappointed at that time, crying out to Xiaomi for a revision of the handset, the Mi Mix 2s was born and the most interesting about it, is that our wish has finally been granted. The Mi Mix 2s comes with a dual lens system with both 12 Megapixel sensors on the back.
Arranged typically as that of the Redmi Note 5 Pro, the dual cameras on the Mi Mix 2s sits vertically on the upper right hand corner on the handset, and that’s found on the left of the handset while looking from the back. As we’ve mentioned, the sensors are 12 Megapixels with one having a wide-angle lens with 4-axis OIS and an f/1.8 Aperture, the other is a telephoto lens that gives a 2x optical zoom with an f/2.4 Aperture. This supports hybrid Dual Pixel AF with dark light enhancements to take focusing a top necessity. At the front we have a single 5 Megapixel Selfie camera which should be enough to take Selfie shots at most given time and that will also provide high quality images when video calling.
What’s really different on the Mi Mix 2s is it’s AI powered, designed to take advantage on the hardware, the imaging software inside the Mi Mix 2s can produce great photos with AI-algorithms built-in, It supports AI Bokeh shots, Supports facial recognition and AI Beauty enhancements, understand and identify up to 25 labels and up to 206 scenes. Anything featured on the new camera system on the handset could pretty much be made possible thanks to AI.
As an upgrade to last year’s Mi Mix 2, the Mi Mix 2s now includes the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 chipset, it has an 8-core CPU and Adreno 630 graphics processor along with 6GB for the standard variants and the top spec’d with 8GB of RAM. Respectively, RAM configuration are accompanied by the following amount of storage space: 64GB, 128GB and 256GB. There’s no mention of a microSD card support as always so it would be wise to select which of these configurations are well suited for each user.
The new Mi Mix 2s is equipped with 3400mAh embedded battery and supports fast charging through USB-C with Qualcomm Quick Charge 3.0. unlike all other Xiaomi devices, the Mi Mix 2s is the first Mi device to sport Wireless charging and is compliant with Qi Wireless charging technology standards not only that, its wireless charging capabilities also support fast Wireless charging at 7.5W, now that’s impressive.
Android 8.1 Oreo drives the new Mi Mix 2s with Xiaomi’s latest MIUI 9.5 proprietary user interface on top and that includes everything including its AI enabled features built-in.
