The flip is on for the next generation of smartphone devices. Samsung just recently announced the new Galaxy Z Flip – a foldable smartphone device and a second generation of its kind as a follow-up to 2018’s much of a concept than a consumer device the Galaxy Fold.
The new Samsung Galaxy Z Flip employs a flexible hybrid glass, a proprietary Samsung Ultra Thin Glass called the Infinity Flex Display. Besides that it folds, it also has a punch-hole right at the top-center of the display to make way for the 10 Megapixel Selfie camera.
Speaking of the camera, the Galaxy Z Flip also has a dual main camera module that houses a 12 Megapixel primary sensor with Wide angle lens and features OIS, 1.4μm Pixel size, a f/1.8 bright aperture HDR10+ recording and tracking AF. This is coupled with a secondary sensor of the same resolution but comes with an f/2.2 Ultra Wide angle lens.
Going back to the folding glass on the device, Samsung utilized a new hideaway dual CAM mechanism to make its open and fold as smooth as possible and comes with a new proprietary sweeper technology using nylon fibers to put dust and dirt at bay.
Performance-wise, the new Galaxy Z Flip uses a Qualcomm Snapdragon 855+ SoC based on 7nm process and is backed by 8GB of RAM and 256GB of non-expandable internal storage.
It boots Android 10 with One UI 2.0 and runs on 3300mAh dual battery, this seems a little less than what we’d expect on latest devices but given that it’s an early entry to future smartphone design, we could give it a chance for now but we don’t have to complain too much at it somehow support a 15W fast charging to fill the battery in no time and also takes Wireless charging for more convenience and even there’s reverse charging.
Features as we’d see it, the new Galaxy Z Flip is secured by Samsung’s tried and tested KNOX security suite. It also comes with a fingerprint reader, a capacitive one on which in my opinion makes a lot more sense than the gimmicky display integrated sensor. And then there’s facial recognition which works are you unfold the device.
A nifty little feature that we found useful is the tiny display on the outside which shows simple but useful notifications.
The new Samsung Galaxy Z Flip is available in Mirror Purple, Mirror Black and Mirror Gold color options. In addition to this choices, Samsung also added a Thom Browne Edition which includes a specialized version of the handset and comes with specialized theme and contents plus its accompanying accessories including a customized Galaxy Buds+ and a Galaxy Watch Active2 that matches Thom Browne visual identity.
