While we are busy rounding up about Google I/O 2014, Starmobile slips its way out without us noticing it. It was then that Starmobile rolled out the new Starmobile UP which believed to go head-to-head with Myphone’s RIO.  Reigning at the sub 5K price range, the RIO has been the king in this segment since other competitors have failed to meet the specs to price ratio offered by RIO. Until today eventually, with the release of Starmobile UP, that crown would have a new place to stay.

To start with, at any angle the Starmobile UP features a striking premium design with much of the front being covered by the protective glass layer, and the back with the matte textured finish to complement the camera module and the single speaker grill. All appropriate markings are well done and on the right places.

The Starmobile UP features a 5-inch multipoint capacitive touchscreen IPS display with a scratch resistant glass – a great protective advantage against other offerings but may fall down by having a rather lower resolution display of 854 x 480 which isn’t bad at all for the average user. Powered by 1.3 GHz Quad-core ARM Cortex A7 processor with 1 GB RAM and Mali-400 MP-2 graphics processor that should handle every graphic intensive applications with ease. 4 GB of internal storage and expandable with microSD card support of up to 32 GB.

The back camera on the UP features an 8 Megapixel resolution with Autofocus Back Side Illuminated (BSI) sensor. 8 Megapixel sensor recent are becoming the norms in the smartphone arena with devices such as the UP equips. The secondary camera on the front is a 2 Megapixel shooter and features a BSI sensor as well. BSI sensors are great in taking photos in areas with low lighting conditions as they harvest even the very least possible source of light to brighten up the capture image/s.

As standard to every phone released locally, the Starmobile UP supports 3G and HSPA+ wireless connectivity with Dual SIM support. Other connectivity features includes; Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS, microUSB with OTG support.

Coming as a new feature for Starmobile devices is the new Tap to Wake / Sleep feature which works just the the Knock-On feature on some LG devices. With just a double tap on the screen the device will either wake the display or put it into sleep. Moreover, an intelligent pattern recognition is supported and a multipoint gesture recognition for added functionality to work with the device like never before.

Aside from the neat gesture controls, the new UP also features a Call and Text filtering to restrict and filter certain incoming voice calls and SMS messages for added privacy.

As time goes by, lower end devices are slowly eating up the mid-end and high-end markets as these low cost devices are gradually having also the same or on par with features that are previously can only be found on higher end devices.

The new Starmobile UP is now available on all starmobile stores, kiosks and partner retail outlets nationwide with a price of 4,990 Php.
