You’re probably itching at the moment to get your hands with Oppo’s latest evolutionary Find X device or perhaps the upcoming Selfie-centric F9. But there’s a new kid in town which looks (if you’ve followed the recent leaks) closely the same as the F9 or the F9 Pro and that’s this year’s Oppo’s mid-range flagship the R17.
The most prominent feature found on the new R17 is the all new virtually bezel less design and the small triangular almost like a teardrop shaped notch on the top of the display. This notch houses the front facing camera of the device. It’s a known fact that Oppo uses the aesthetics of the R series for its other series of devices namely the “F” Series which focuses on Selfies and is what we always have here in the Philippines and the upcoming OnePlus 6T.
There are a few first for the Oppo R17, one being the first to includes Qualcomm’s latest 10nm process chip the Snapdragon 670. It comes with an 8-core processor in big-Little configuration. There’s two Kryo 260 high performance cores running at 2GHz and 6 power efficient cores of Kryo 360 running at 1.7GHz. The new chipset brought along with it an Adreno 615 GPU while the ISP is a Spectra 250. The new flagship-grade Snapdragon 670 on the new Oppo R17 is paired with 8GB of RAM and a single storage option of 128GB.
Then with the increasing number of in-display fingerprint scanner, the Oppo R17 also has that feature which set itself apart from the likes of Apple, Samsung among others. There latter companies are supposed to unveil or at least as expected to pioneer such technology on smartphone devices but that didn’t happen.
With regards to the display, the Oppo R17 comes with a large 6.4-inch AMOLED display and comes with almost no bezels. That however can be said true on both sides of the handset and partially on the top of the device where the “V-shaped” notch is found. The bottom part though has the noticeable bezel to it and that’s because of the display controller and stuff. And with it coming into the market, the new R17 is one of the first devices around to equipped a Corning Gorilla Glass 6 lamination.
Oppo is known to make Selfies a priority and with that, the handset comes with a 25 Megapixel shooter on the front, the same camera sensor found on the F7 and the Find X. While the back has a dual camera setup which we are yet to understand fully, but according to Oppo, the camera module on the back as well as on the front are optimized to fully utilized its AI capabilities which can detect up to 800 scenes.
Th new Oppo R17 boots Color OS 5.2 which is currently based on Android 8.1, besides that slightly refreshed interface, the new Android 8.1-based UX comes bundled with more voice-activated features, more information panels and better battery management system.
Talking about the battery, the R17 comes with a 3500 mAh embedded battery and supports VOOC, a proprietary fast charging technology from Oppo.
Oppo will be launching the new R17 this August 20th in China along its official price next week. Customers may choose between Stream Blue and Neon Purple color options.
