No OTA updates for OnePlus One devices sold in India, clarifies Cyanogen
OnePlus and Cyanogen is in a major complicated situation at the moment and to sum clarify more things up, Cyanogen further explains its position when sending out updates for the flagship killer phone the OnePlus One. It has been a month since Cyanogen signed an agreement to exclusively support MicroMax YU devices in India, coincidentally, OnePlus is also entering the Indian waters to take on the market. OnePlus is about to release its One device around this December and though it will come with a Cyanogenmod OS onboard, the agreement between Cyanogen and MicroMax will eventually limit OnePlus One from getting direct updates from Cyanogen.
The problem has been formally recognized by OnePlus and issued a statement which states that even though OnePlus One devices will ship with Cyanogen software in India but their next updates will be a home-brewed OS that is more stable, fast and lightweight. A week ago, Cyanogen made a statement that they are committed to support for all devices powered by Cyanogenmod including OTA updates. Though this had made things a better clearer, it turn out that there are much more to it.
Cyanogen’s most recent blog post has been an eye opener for everyone, not only for the companies concerned but also to users who were patiently waiting for the OnePlus One device to be officially available in India. Yes indeed, Cyanogen is committed to provide support for the OnePlus One everywhere including India but the tricky part is that, OnePlus One units will receive updates via the OTA update only when the unit was bought from elsewhere, official OnePlus One devices specific for the Indian market on the other hand won’t be able to receive and updates from Cyanogenmod.
As OnePlus had already scheduled a December release of its One device in India, Indian customers should expect a refreshed new interface and ROM straight from OnePlus itself when the first wave of updates hit the India-specific OnePlus One devices. This gave us now a seemingly concrete idea on what is going happen next between the partnership. We should then expect something like a OEM customized ROM of Android from OnePlus as they are now about to be getting ready to release the OnePlus Two by next year.
