Current Windows Phone 8/8.1 Start screen does not support folders natively but thanks to Nokia’s app folder that little feature is now possible to WP8/8.1. Nokia’s initiative has given the company at Redmond the idea of how important it is to organize things within the Start screen to some extent.
Since WP 7 OS, the Start Screen has not been given a major feature and only supported Metro live tiles as its main contents. An update due for Window Phone 8.1 however will enable folder support for the Start screen without the need of another app to for the same functionality.
Microsoft post a list of instructions (briefly, now removed) on how to add folders to the Start Screen. Users will just have to drag and drop tiles on top of each other to create a folder similar to iOS and a few variants Android. The said feature will be available for devices with Windows Phone 8.1 installed and is expected to roll out either this coming July or August.
