After nearly two decades in the mobile market, LG on April 5th confirmed that the company is closing its mobile division as approved by its board of directors. As the company’s mobile business unit is now officially closed, LG will now focus its resources in other areas including electric vehicle components, IoT devices, smart homes, robotics, AI and business-to-business solutions.
Existing LG devices in the market will still be sold from retailers until all devices from the inventory are sold and that the company promises both hardware and software support to existing customers for a period of time that varies by region.
The company is expected to complete the process of closing down LG’s mobile division by July 31 but R&D efforts in the field of communication networks will continue and that includes products for next generation’s 6G to strengthen its competitiveness in other areas. Together with this new direction, it is also confirmed that all core LG technologies developed through its almost 20 years in the business will be retained and will be available for future products from the company.
