Google Pixel 4 automatically throttles down refresh rate to 60Hz when at 75% screen brightness and below

One of the new features from Google’s own Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL devices is the 90Hz display refresh rate. It was so celebrated knowing for a fact that such refresh rate in today’s mobile devices means smoother and faster screen response with noticeably less lag and more fluid animations.

But things drips down quite differently for the Pixel 4 as Google only enables such feature when screen brightness is pulled up max, bringing the brightness down to 75% or below will throttle down the screen refresh rate back to 60Hz.

Thankfully, there’s a workaround with this issue but you’ll have to head over to the Developer’s option from the Settings to do that. There is also a scenario where the 90Hz refresh rate would work that is when the Ambient EQ is on and that the surrounding light is bright.

Google is the first one caught with this throttling down-scheme on display refresh rate. Other manufacturers chose not to set this feature on or off automatically but allows users to choose between 60Hz and 90Hz from their display settings.

Google still kept mum over the issue, would they make changes on their next monthly updates? We still don’t know but we should be able to find out soon.
