You’ve probably already seen the new Apple iPhone 17 (assuming you did). It’s one of Apple’s most eye-catching releases not just because it’s a new product, but because the upgrades themselves are worth noticing.

But let’s be honest: if you’re using an iPhone 15 or iPhone 16, the improvements may feel incremental rather than revolutionary. However, if you’re still on an iPhone 13 or older, upgrading to the iPhone 17 will feel like a major leap forward.

Coming from an Android user’s perspective, Apple devices have always exuded a sense of restriction due to their closed ecosystem. The hardware is undeniably solid, and the camera system is consistently top-tier, but the walled garden often feels limiting. Still, despite these boundaries, I have to admit—the iPhone 17 series is such a strong upgrade that it may convince even skeptics to switch.

Apple launched the iPhone 17 series with four models: the standard iPhone 17, the iPhone 17 Pro, the iPhone 17 Pro Max, and the all-new iPhone 17 Air.

iPhone 17

The standard iPhone 17 feels like the sweet spot in the lineup. Its upgrades are a real breakthrough compared to previous base models. While the Pro variants bring premium features and the iPhone 17 Air introduces a slim, lightweight design, the iPhone 17 packs just the right balance of performance and value.

It comes with a 6.3-inch Super Retina XDR display, now featuring ProMotion with adaptive refresh rates up to 120Hz and peak brightness up to 3,000 nits. The display also supports Always-On and is protected by Ceramic Shield 2 with improved scratch resistance.

Under the hood, the iPhone 17 is powered by Apple’s new 3nm A19 chip. Apple claims it’s 1.5x faster than the A15 Bionic and has a 4-core GPU delivering twice the performance. It also debuts the new N1 networking chip, offering Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, and Thread support. Some markets, however, only get an eSIM version, while others will still include nano-SIM compatibility.

Apple Intelligence (AI) integration is also supported thanks to its improved Neural Engine. Battery life is rated at up to 30 hours of video playback, and with the new 40W Dynamic Power Adapter (sold separately), you can charge to 50% in just 20 minutes.

For cameras, the iPhone 17 introduces dual 48MP sensors on the back—a first for a non-Pro iPhone. You get a wide-angle main lens and an ultrawide lens with macro capabilities, plus 2x lossless zoom.

iPhone 17 Pro & iPhone 17 Pro Max

The Pro models received the most dramatic design update. The camera module now extends across the back, creating a distinct two-tone aesthetic. Interestingly, Apple returned to aluminum (Series 7000 anodized) after years of pushing titanium. This material choice allows for fresh color options: refined silver, deep blue, and a striking new cosmic orange.

The iPhone 17 Pro sports a 6.3-inch display, while the Pro Max stretches to 6.9 inches. Both feature Super Retina XDR OLED with ProMotion, adaptive 120Hz refresh rates, 3,000 nits brightness, and Ceramic Shield protection. Even the rear panel incorporates ceramic glass where the wireless charging coil sits, enhancing both durability and design.

The camera system is the biggest leap yet—three 48MP sensors: a 26mm wide main, a 13mm ultrawide, and a telephoto with 4x optical zoom (up to 8x digital). On the front, an 18MP selfie camera adds Center Stage, which automatically adjusts the frame to keep subjects centered, even in landscape selfies.

Performance-wise, both models run on the A19 Pro chip (3nm), with a 6-core CPU, 6-core GPU, and 16-core Neural Engine optimized for Apple Intelligence. To maintain performance, Apple equipped the Pros with a vapor chamber cooling system. Like the standard model, they also feature the N1 networking chip.

Apple hasn’t disclosed exact battery capacities, but claims up to 39 hours of video playback. Most regions will receive eSIM-only models, though some will still have nano-SIM options.

iPhone 17 Air

Replacing the “Plus” in Apple’s lineup, the iPhone 17 Air takes a bold new approach: ultra-thin design. At just 5.6mm, it’s the thinnest iPhone ever. Despite this, it houses a 6.5-inch LTPO Retina XDR OLED with ProMotion 120Hz, 3,000 nits brightness, and Ceramic Shield 2 protection.

The thin profile does mean trade-offs. The Air only carries a single rear camera—a 48MP sensor—but it’s versatile enough for most users. Up front, you still get the 18MP selfie camera with Center Stage.

Performance remains flagship-level, with the A19 Pro chip inside, though the Air’s variant features a 5-core GPU instead of the 6-core found in the Pro models. Networking support matches the lineup with Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, and Thread.

Battery life is marketed as “all-day,” but given its thinness, Apple also introduced a slim MagSafe Battery accessory that can push playback time up to 40 hours.
