Together with the new iPad mini 3, Apple also unveiled the new iPad Air 2 which Apple claims as the thinnest iPad at 6.1 mm to date. Apple like the iPad mini 3 has also added a gold finish to the new iPad Air 2 along with existing Silver and Space Gray finish.
The new tablet is powered by Apple A8X chip which is a custom version of the A8 processor that is 40% faster and is designed specifically for the iPad family, its GPU is also 2.5x faster that the previous generation A7 chips. Aside from the new processors, the new iPad Air 2 also got a slight display improvement, though basically it still has the same size and resolution as its predecessor, the one on the new iPad Air 2 has an anti-reflective coating, which reduces reflection from the screen improving visibility of up to 56%.
The iPad Air 2 received a significant upgrade in the camera department, it comes with a new 8 Megapixel iSight camera sensor with burst mode capability, aside from the usual camera features, the new iSight can take slow-mo videos at 120 fps, to complement the rich video recording of the new iPad Air 2, Apple has included a second mic for stereo recording. On the front is also a new 1.2 Megapixel camera sensor with an improved camera functions with HDR capabilities and improved face detection.
Connectivity have significantly improved with the new generation iPad Air as it now feature Wi-Fi 802.11ac (MIMO) and with LTE connectivity, it’s everything you could ask for in a tablet. Battery can take 10 hours of continuous usage before it needs to recharge. What’s more, the new iPad Air 2 now feature Touch ID fingerprint sensor that is embedded on the device home button like the one found in iPhone 5 and iPhone 6 and of course it includes Apple Play.
Like the new iPad mini 3, the new iPad Air 2 now has a gold color option in addition to silver and Space gray and will be available starting by the end of next week while pre-orders will be taken starting today in 29 different countries that includes: US, UK, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Canada, China (Wi-Fi models only), Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Macau (Wi-Fi models only), Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Singapore, Slovakia, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland. Croatia, Greece, Puerto Rico, Russia, Turkey, United Arab Emirates and other regions will have the new device ready by the end of october and the rest of the world in the coming months.
For a start, the new iPad Air 2 will be priced at $499 for the 16 GB, the 32 GB variant will no longer be available and instead the 64 GB variant would take its place which will cost $599. These prices are for the Wi-Fi only variants, for the LTE enabled models, users will just have to add $130 to the existing prices on Wi-Fi only variants.
Please note though that the new iPads are now utilizing a proprietary SIM card which is dubbed as the Apple SIM. Users and most carriers who may wish to use conventional SIM card solution may remove the Apple SIM at any time.
