Android 16 is finally out: bringing live notifications, camera improvements, and enhanced security features
Google
Fresh out of beta, Google is officially rolling out Android 16 to users. Those with compatible devices can now download and install the latest version of the operating system, while Google notes that newer devices will receive the update “in the coming months.”
This update brings several new features, with one of the most notable enhancements in the notification system.
Smarter, More Dynamic Notifications
Android 16 introduces live notifications, which display real-time updates from apps directly in the notification panel. For example, if you’re using a ride-hailing app, you’ll now see a progress bar showing how long until your driver arrives—right from the lock screen or pull-down menu. This helps reduce the need to constantly open the app to check for updates.

In addition, notifications from the same app are now grouped together, making them easier to manage and read at a glance.
Imaging Gets a Pro-Level Boost
Android 16 also enhances mobile photography and video with features like:
- Automatic night mode scene detection
- Hybrid auto exposure
- Precise color temperature adjustments
- Ultra HDR images now support HEIC encoding
- Support for Advanced Professional Video (APV) codec for high-end video recording
These upgrades aim to bring more professional-grade imaging capabilities to everyday users.
RCS & Messaging Enhancements
RCS group chats receive a boost in Android 16 with:
- Custom icons for group chats
- The ability to mute conversation threads
Google Photos now integrates AI-powered editing, offering suggested edits for your images. Meanwhile, Emoji Kitchen expands with new custom sticker combinations, adding more creative ways to express yourself.
Wear OS & Accessibility Features
Wear OS devices benefit from new features too. You can now:
- Pay for transit fares directly from your smartwatch without launching a dedicated app
- Enjoy LE Audio support for hearing aids
- Use native controls to manage hearing devices
- Hearing devices users can wwitch to the phone’s microphone for clearer audio in noisy environments

Improved Security and Scam Protection
Security also gets a major upgrade in Android 16. With just one tap, users are now better protected against:
- Online attacks
- Harmful websites
- Unsafe apps
- Scam calls and messages

Google has also introduced enhanced scam detection features that proactively warn users about suspicious messages or phone calls.
Adaptive Android apps
Android apps on Android 16 can now run smoothly across various display sizes and orientations. They seamlessly adapt to different resolutions and aspect ratios, whether in portrait or landscape mode.

Native Desktop Mode (Coming Soon)
Lastly, Android 16 lays the foundation for native desktop windowing, a long-requested feature that mirrors what Samsung currently offers with DeX. While this feature won’t launch immediately, Google says it will roll out later this year and early previews look very promising.
