Wired audio is enjoying a massive culture revival, and Sony just played the ultimate nostalgia card. The Japanese tech giant is officially bringing back the legendary on-ear aesthetic that defined the portable music revolution with the debut of the Sony MDR-3R.

For anyone who grew up rocking a tape player or just loves the classic retro look, these are a direct tribute to the original 1979 MDR-3 headphones that shipped alongside the very first cassette Walkman.

Sony didn’t mess with the classic mechanical blueprint. You still get the ultra-slim adjustable metal headband, the vintage “Dynamic Stereo Headphones” lettering, and an incredibly light 38-gram open-air frame that makes you forget you’re even wearing them. To double down on the aesthetic, every pair comes with interchangeable bright orange and blue foam ear cushions so you can mix and match to fit your daily outfit grid.

Connectivity is where Sony entirely leaves the analog days behind. Instead of a vintage 3.5mm jack or fussing around with finicky Bluetooth pairing, battery charging, or firmware updates, the MDR-3R terminates in a fixed USB Type-C cable. It plugs straight into your phone, laptop, or tablet for instant plug-and-play simplicity. The modernized cable also adds an in-line remote and built-in microphone for hands-free calls and quick track adjustments.

Underneath the porous foam, Sony keeps things true to the original with 23mm dynamic drivers. You can expect a bright, airy soundstage that holds its own for mid and high frequencies—just don’t expect the heavy, thumping bass of today’s bulky over-ear cans.

The standard silver MDR-3R is hitting the market for just below $60 (around Php 3,500). And if you want to look straight out of Hawkins, Indiana, Sony is also dropping a special Stranger Things Edition featuring custom black-and-red pads and an engraved series logo for less than $80.
