Yahoo’s new Livetext messenger makes use of the text on video without the sound
Here’s a question for you guys… When was the last time you use Yahoo Messenger? Perhaps some of you are still pretty much dedicated to the app but most of us nowadays are turning into the more convenient and feature rich mobile apps on our smartphone and tablet devices. Though Yahoo has their own mobile messenger in the past but that seems to have been left with the times and has been taken over by more modern and engaging apps such as Google Hangouts, Messenger by Facebook, Skype, KaKaoTalk just to name a few.
But recently, Yahoo has just silently released their latest attempt in the mobile messaging space with their new Livetext, a video chat app that seems to utilize short and silent video clips and share them with your friends. Interactions are made through text that pops over the video. It’s rather a radical way for a messenger to make waves with what Yahoo describes as “the most natural way to have REAL conversations”, But without audio in those videos, it’s an odd way to find to have a real conversations.
Here is what you’d expect on Livetext as users uses them
Sounds on a video is out for the next yahoo messenger where the app opt for a text-based conversations. As Yahoo puts it, audio is “rarely convenient in today’s fast-paced world”, that context makes us wonder what the company really have in mind. Will the trick gets more users interacting or put them away with alternatives that does all the wonders where features are applied appropriately in a given situation. Perhaps, Yahoo is experimenting things that would catch up with real world scenarios and by that means testing their apps with real world users.
On the plus note however, the app will be free forever and uses wireless data of Wi-Fi connection whenever they are available to start a conversation. Like all other messengers available, users sends messages to the other end and when the recipient starts chatting the video would begin immediately.
The app is currently available on iOS devices and has been quietly released in Hong Kong iTunes Store since the 11th of July. So from our perspective and initial thoughts about the availability of the app, it now seem to confirm our impression that the app might not be a final product and is more on the beta testing phase. But as it looks like that Yahoo needs something to come out with in order to make their early technology to catch with the modern society, we could expect Yahoo to formally announce the app for other regions with better interactive features. Android users may have to wait for a little longer to become available in Google Play but we known Yahoo would be stupid enough to leave Android users out in the cold and may even support its Windows counterpart as well (we hope).
