Xiaomi shows off its first Quad-Curved Waterfall display concept on a smartphone

Xiaomi pioneers new technologies bringing out new concept devices every now and then. The latest has something to do with smartphone display as the company introduced the worlds first true quad-curved waterfall screen.

Unlike previous screen concepts from Xiaomi, the new concept focuses on the classic smartphone design with a 88° hyper quad-curved screen that allows visual interfaces to seamless flow over the phone’s four edges like water. The catch here though is the missing ports and buttons which moved to virtual buttons available on the overflown screen on the sides.

One of the challenges that Xiaomi had to face in producing the concept is not the display as flexible OLED screen is becoming the new normal, but rather in manufacturing its 88° quad-curved glass panel and the 3D bonding process.

To create such marvel, Xiaomi have self-developed a glass processing equipment, hot bending the glass under 800°C high temperature and pressure and polishing with four different polishing tools and more than ten complex polishing procedures and thousand attempts to create the desired piece of engineering.

To make the 88° quad-curved glass work with a flexible display, Xiaomi also adopted an innovative 3D bonding process of screen stacking design which ensures a perfect and flawless screen performance.
