Breaking from the sheets, the new Redmi Note 3 from Xiaomi makes an official début with company CEO Lei Jun at China National Convention Center. From what we’ve already known earlier, the third generation Redmi Note packs a new metal unibody design with a large full-HD screen, a fingerprint sensor and a large internal battery to complete the package.

Making way for a slimmer and premium designs, the new Redmi Note 3’s metallic unibody shell gives the handset a premium touch with a significantly thin profile and makes things lighter than the usual polycarbonate housed handsets. Regardless on how the metal housing shove off those excess weight, the Redmi Note 3 is still heavier than its predecessor but on its advantage as Xiaomi to even manage to include a massive 4000 mAh embedded battery with only 4 grams heavier than the out-going Redmi Note 2, just imagine how the Redmi Note 3 would be if they’ve stayed with a plastic body.

/ Feature Set

With significant updates since the Redmi Note 2 and despite the shorter length of time between releases, the forthcoming Redmi Note 3 packs a significant upgrade both externally and internally. From the user’s perspective, the new Redmi Note 3 is a large premium-built piece of hardware in a slim profile, it features a large 5.5-inch full-HD display with Sunlight/Night display and Reading mode with 401 ppi pixel density on 1080 x 1920 resolution. Inside the handset is a highly capable processing powerhouse with the flagship chipset from MediaTek the new 64-bit Helio X10 SoC with octa-core processors running at 2.0 Ghz. The handset will be available in two configurations, one with 2 GB RAM and 16 GB internal storage combo while the other more premium set will include 3 GB of RAM and 32 GB of internal storage space.

For the image centric customers, Redmi Note 3 comes with a 13 Megapixel main camera with F/2.2 aperture, Phase detection auto focus and Dual-LED flash. It supports, 1080p video recording, HDR mode while the front camera also comes with 5 Megapixel sensor which is suited best for high-resolution video calls and Selfies with 36 different Smart Beauty profiles.

One of the most significant addition to the table of specs, the addition of the fingerprint sensor on the Redmi Note 3 opens new doors and functionality to the handset. It biometric reader makes transaction over the internet more secure and with Xiaomi’s own implementation of the fingerprint reader, users can user the feature to unlock their devices in a significantly short amount of time for just 0.3 seconds and that’s even faster that one can blink an eye, now that’s easy and pretty much convenient and more secure than the usual unlocking gestures on non-fingerprint sensor equipped devices.

Connectivity-wise, the Redmi Note 3 includes Dual SIM capabilities with both SIM slots supporting 4G/LTE in addition to 3G/HSPA+ and 2G/GSM wireless connectivity and a full set of standard connectivity options with Wi-Fi 802.11 ac, Bluetooth 4.1, USB 2.0 through microUSB with OTG support and charging, GPS with A-GPS and GLONASS support.

The Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 runs Android 5.1 (Lollipop) with Xiaomi’s proprietary MIUI 7 on top. The handset is powered by a juicy 4000 mAh internal battery which takes most of the handset’s weight with 164 grams a 4 gram heavier than its predecessor. Despite the added weight, Xiaomi regards this as insignificant to users with what’s more appealing is the higher capacity battery and other added features that makes the new Redmi Note 3 a noteworthy choice from other competing products.

The new handset measures 150 x 76 x 8.65 mm and that’s significantly thinner than its previous generations and at 164 grams, the Redmi Note 3’s full-metal unibody design from aluminum is considered thin and light with 120-point ultra-fine double-sided sandblasting for high quality finish and texture.

When released, the handset’s price starts at RM 899 ($140) for the 2G/16GB RAM-Storage combo while for the 3GB/32GB configuration can be had for RM 1099($172) and will be available in 3 color variants with Silver, Gold and Dark Grey as seen below:
