Xiaomi’s Redmi line are turning up big on its own as it unveiled the new K40 series and the brand’s new flagship 2021 device with three new core versions: Redmi K40 Pro+, Redmi K40 Pro and the Redmi K40.
The newly announced devices are all running the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon 800-series chipsets. Both K40 Pro+ and the K40 Pro are coming with the flagship Snapdragon 888 SoC while the base-model K40 runs on a 7nm Snapdragon 870 chipset.
All three are built with a 6.67-inch Super AMOLED displays with Full-HD+ resolution and super bright 1300nits of brightness that should be great for outdoors. It also sport a 120Hz refresh rates and 360Hz of touch sampling rate. The display is covered with Corning Gorilla Glass 5 for protection against scratches and bumps.
Redmi K40 Pro+
This Snapdragon 888-powered device provides the best experience among the three with an LPDDR5 12GB of RAM on board and 256GB of UFS 3.1 storage, you’ll be in for a super performing device that virtually bests in everything.
It’s imaging prowess lies on a 108 Megapixel Samsung ISOCELL HM2 sensor and supports 9-in-1 binning with an effective pixel size of 2.1 µm. It features a dual native ISO and Super Night Scene 2.0 which tries to provide the best imaging quality possible in any lighting conditions and of course there’s the 8K video recording available, that is if you need it.
completing the imaging rig on the back is a 8 Megapixel sensor with an Ultra Wide lens together with a dual-purpose 5 Megapixel Telephoto/macro shooter. As for the front, you’ll have a 20 Megapixel Selfie camera which should be good enough for Selfies but mind the Beautification levels on this one as Xiaomi devices tends to filter shots no matter your modes may be.
Redmi K40 Pro
This version of the series tones its imaging hardware down a half with a 64 Megapixel main camera that supports 4-in-1 binning with an effective pixel size of 1.6µm. It also supports 8K video recording like the Pro+.
Like the Redmi K40 Pro+, The K40 Pro is also powered by a Snapdragon 888 but comes with a select configuration options of RAM and storage combinations which is as follows: 6GB/128GB, 8GB/128GB, 8GB/256GB.
Redmi K40
The base model K40 dropped down a notch from the two Pro variants as it comes with a Snapdragon 870 chip but don’t be fooled as this chipset is a repurposed version of the tried and tested Snapdragon 865 with core clock speed boosted to 3.2GHz.
RAM starts a modest though at 6GB and maxes out at 12GB. Storage space is similar with the first two new models at 128GB or 256GB.
Imaging also got a downgrade as well with a Sony IMX582 48 Megapixel sensor. It’s quite capable as of yet but don’t expect get more out of it as this sensor is two generations behind. This also means that it’s not going to get 8K videos on this one and instead you’ll have to settle with up to 4K video recording at 30fps. It’s not bad if you’d ask me.
Connectivity-wise, these devices got a plenty starting of with 5G wireless connection however you won’t get mmWave available on any of the models but at least you have Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.2 for the Pro+ and Pro while the base variant has Wi-Fi 6 Bluetooth 5.1. There’s also NFC and an IR Blaster which are standard from these devices.
As for the Battery, the three new Redmi K40 series comes with a 4,520mAh battery that supports up to 33W fast-charging on USB Power Delivery 3.0 and QuickCharge 3.0+ USB-C protocols.
Feature-wise, it has stereo speakers and comes with a dedicated 3.5mm audio jack and supports Dolby ATMOS and Hi-Res audio. The fingerprint reader is mounted on the power button but that’s alright as it serves its purpose well. There’s also an X-axis linear motor for a much better haptic feedback and has an IP53 water and dust resistance certification.
