Soon after Oppo announced its 2018 flagship with the new R15, Vivo follow suit with their new X21 and as expected, both devices from Oppo and Vivo resembles quite alike on the first glance. Primarily in the display department, it has the same 6.28-inch display with full-HD+ resolution and a notch on top. There’s a dual camera on the back but on the Vivo X21, they are oriented vertically and is position on the upper right hand corner of the back of X21, something that’s more similar from the iPhone X (now that I mentioned it).
With the full screen display on the front with minimum bezels, the X21 features a notch, a feature on recent phones that received mixed reviews from users, whether we like it or not though, manufacturers will have them implemented. While everyone else seems to include the display notch mainly to house their front facing camera and that’s about it, the X21 too does this with its 12 Megapixel front-facing Selfie shooter with an f/2.0 Aperture lens. Not only that, Vivo does optimized that little cut-out on top with an infrared fill light that help keep its “Face Wake 2.0” feature properly implemented and track facial features more accurately.
At the back, the handset (as we have already told earlier) has a dual lens setup and that houses a 12 Megapixel primary sensor with f/1.8 Aperture lens and is supported by a 5 Megapixel depth sensing camera that takes care of all the Bokeh shots and other effects. These cameras are optimized with AI algorithm in its software and are designed to take the best photos possible.
What powers the new Vivo X21 is Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 660 chipset with its 8-core CPU and a dedicated AI core for everything AI-enhanced features that the handset has to offer and Adreno 512 graphics processor. It comes with an ample amount of RAM at 6GB and choice of either 64GB or a 128GB of expandable internal storage.
The new handset runs Vivo’s proprietary FunTouch 4.0 based on Android 8.0 Oreo. Keeping the lights lit is a 3200 mAh embedded battery and with fast charging support.
With two choice of the X21 based on storage capacities, the 128GB variant has a little more added feature than the 64GB version and it’s how their fingerprint sensors were implemented. On the 64GB variant, the X21 has its biometric sensor placed on the back of the handset while the top of the line 128GB version will do with Vivo’s Under-Display fingerprint scanner or simple called UD. Vivo is one of the pioneers to first implement such feature in the consumer market like its predecessor the X20 UD and the recently demoed Vivo Apex in MWC 2018.
The new X21 64GB version will cost 2,898 CNY which translates of around US$458 while the X21 UD 128GB variant costs 3,198 or roughly around US$505. This really sound like a top end mid-rangers for the most part but considering its features, it’s a bang for the buck deal. These devices will be available for pre-order starting on March 24 and are available in Black, Aurora White and Ruby Red color options
