Over a decade ago, cellphones are going from large brick-sized devices to almost thumb in sizes. Since the advent of smartphones, large handsets came back into the limelight but this time instead to hurtling back into smaller profile, Smartphones are battling for relatively large screens and slimmer profile. We seem to have one particular model that fits to become the slimmest smartphone in the world and that’s none other than the newly announced Oppo R5. The R5 is the successor of the Oppo R3 which came out just the mid of this year but in a much thinner profile at 4.85 mm. Thus beating Gionee’s Elife 5.1 and Huawei’s Ascend P6 in the process.

The new Oppo R5 has a dimension of 148.9 x 74.5 x 4.85 mm and only weighs 155 grams. The device is built with Aluminum frame fitted with phase-shifting, heat absorbing material for optimal thermal efficiency. On the front is the large 5.2-inch AMOLED display with full-HD resolution at 423 ppi. Inside is composed of impressive specs despite its super thin design. The device is powered by the new Qualcomm Snapdragon 615 processor – a 64-bit Octa-Core processor with clock speeds at (Quad 2.1GHz and Quad 1.5GHz), Qualcomm’s proprietary Adreno 405 Graphics processor coupled with 2 GB of RAM for a smooth multitasking and high-intensive graphics experience.

Sometimes thin means to compromise on other things and that holds true with the camera module of the Oppo R5 as it protrudes apparently at the back. Though noticeable but that doesn’t mean its a hindrance in the design or functionality, Oppo is quite aware about this issue and has made enough compensation in the design. Functionality wise, it is much better this way than to jeopardize the quality of the camera itself. It comes with a 13 Megapixel f/2.0 Sony IMX214 camera sensor with LED flash. The camera comes with a considerable number of extra features including : Fast-Focus, Subsequent Re-Focus and Ultra-HD that producing ultra high-resolution images from a sequence of images to form one large 50 Megapixel image closely similar to the feature found on the N3. On the front is rather a welcome standard on front cameras as it feature a large 5 Megapixel camera which is about take selfie-shot to the next level and of course a good enough for high-res video calls.

Another this that puts the device’s profile into disadvantage is that with its relatively thin profile, Oppo can only manage to put a rather small battery pack on the back with only 2000 mAh capacity but added VOOC technology to the handset which rapidly charge the device from Zero to 75 % battery in just half an hour similar to the newly announced N3. Another thing is that users will be stock on the device 16 GB built-in storage as the R5 has no room for a micro-SD slot. Also, the new Oppo R5 cannot accommodate the standard 3.5mm port, again because of its thin profile but Oppo has alleviated the situation by including a micro-USB adapter or via Bluetooth with Oppo’s included in the box a O-music Bluetooth clip that also double as a remove control for triggering the camera.

Like the Oppo N3, The Oppo R5 will also launch by December globally in three color variants; Gray, Silver and Gold with a $499 SIM-free price tag.
