The new Qualcomm Snapdragon 480 brings 5G to budget devices

The growing popularity and availability of 5G networks pushes manufacturers to finally make affordable devices capable to take advantage of it. Qualcomm is making the transition simple as it announces the new Snapdragon 480, the first 400-series chipset that features an in-built Snapdragon X51 5G modem-RF System with support for mmWave and Sub-6 GHz networks.

The new chipset comes Kryo 460 CPU cores comprising a Cortex-A76 based Performance cores clocking at 2.0 GHz together with a Cortex-A55 power-efficient cores at 1.8 GHz. It also includes an Adreno 619 GPU with twice the increase in performance for both the CPU and GPU. Along with these features, the chipset also comes with a Hexagon 686 AI co-processor that is responsible for AI related task with 70% more efficiency.

For new generation devices, the new chipset has added support for 120Hz refresh rate displays at Full-HD+ resolutions and up to 64 Megapixel camera sensors with 1080p video recordings at 60fps maximum. It also has the Qualcomm Spectra Chipset 345 ISP that supports simultaneous capture from up to 3 camera sensors.

In additions with these features, the new Snapdragon 480 chipset also supports SA and NSA 5G modes, Dynamic Spectrum Sharing, Bluetooth 5.1 and WiFi 6.

The new Qualcomm Snapdragon 480 chipset is set to debut on entry-level devices from manufacturers like Nokia, Oppo, Vivo, Motorola and Xiaomi on the first quarter of 2021.
