Samsung’s new Galaxy K Zoom blurs the gap between phones and cameras

If you’ve been eyeing for a camera phone recently that takes pictures just like a standalone digicams would take, then you might want to consider Samsung’s latest camera centric smartphone the Galaxy K Zoom as Samsung Mobile has made the rumored imaging centric device official. The new Galaxy K Zoom came about as the successor of last year’s Galaxy S4 Zoom, with a new name specifically meant for a new line of high-end camera equipped smartphone. With its name designation, The “K” designation means Kamera literally as what we have been told from our source Engadget.
Just like its predecessor, The Galaxy K Zoom reflects the design analogy from Samsung’s latest flagship device the Galaxy S5. As rumored earlier, the Galaxy K Zoom packs a much better performing camera with 20.7 Megapixel 1/2.3 BSI CMOS camera sensor with up to 10x Zoom from a fitted Samsung’s retracting lens technology that almost sits flat on the back of the device that significantly much thinner and lighter compared to the Galaxy S4 Zoom. It features Optical Image Stabilization(OIS) technology for a more blur-free photos and videos, Xenon flash for a much brighter photos especially of low-light environments.
As part of its enhanced imaging features, the Galaxy K Zoom also features a AF/AE separation, a Pro Suggest mode with 5 optimized predefined filter settings, a Selfie Alarm mode for taking selfies and object tracking feature that produces clear shots from moving objects and captures videos at 1080p up to 60 fps. Taking a cue from the redesigned camera UI of the Galaxy S5, Samsung emphasize the new interface on the Galaxy K Zoom as more simpler to use than before. With a selection of imaging apps, the Galaxy K Zoom is set to take the camera/smartphone hybrid to replace the standalone digital camera market.
We’ve been tackling the K Zoom’s imaging power, now we move on to the hardware specs of the device and let’s take a look how well the next Zoom device performs as a smartphone itself. On the outside, you’ll be presented with a much slimmer device, the beautiful 4.7-inch display sits upfront that doubles as the camera’s viewfinder and a standard 2.1 Megapixel camera on the front for video calls and ultimately for selfies and such. On the back reminds us the back of the Galaxy S5 with the obviously large camera sensor with a retractable lens along with its Xenon flash. Underneath that beauty lies a more powerful central processing unit with Hexa-Core Exynos 5 CPU comprising two cores of 1.7 GHz Cortex-A5 and four 1.3 GHz Cortex A7’s, couple that with 2 GB of RAM for a much more fluid performance running on Android 4.4 (KitKat) with the standard TouchWiz UI on top.
As a full-blown smartphone device, the K Zoom is equipped with all the standard connectivity features found on smartphones which includes Bluetooth 4.0 LE, GPS with GLONASS, NFC and HSPA+ and LTE network connectivity.
With all that processing power and imaging capabilities it’s unfortunate to know that the Galaxy K Zoom only comes with 8 GB of internal storage which is alleviated with a memory expansion option via a microSD cards supporting up to 64 GB. It also comes with a little less than expected 2,430 mAh battery, given the device is equipped with a more power-hungry Xenon flash, taking photos with the xenon flash on means taking your power cable with you as the device would die less than a day in cases when using the camera with the flash on.
The Galaxy K Zoom will be available next month and comes in three colors; Charcoal Black, Electric Blue and Shimmering White.
