It’s been a decade long that we come this far. From what used to be a blocky and bulky kind of smartphone device, the Samsung Galaxy series has always been updated to take the next step in the development of mobile phone technologies.

So at its 10th Anniversary, Samsung didn’t just launched another Galaxy S flagship this year but the birth of a whole new era of mobile devices: – the Samsung Galaxy Fold.
It’s been years since Samsung showed us their first prototype of a foldable display. We remembered the first Galaxy Note edge and it was the next big step in mobile display development for Samsung. The new Galaxy Fold will be the predecessor of future generation mobile devices as this turns out to be the beginning of the next evolution.

The Galaxy Fold has a 4.6-inch primary screen or its cover display as they call it. And then when unfolded, baaam… you’ll be in for a whole new experience with its large 7.3-inch foldable display. The whole mechanism is handled by a uniquely designed hinge with interlocked gears to smoothly open and fold the device. Users will also be able to customize the color of the hinge to make it to their personal taste.

The 7.3-inch screen on the Galaxy Fold is a Dynamic AMOLED display like the Galaxy S10 and has a QXGA+ resolution. This gives us a 4:3 Aspect ratio and that’s evident with the square design of the display.
The new handset is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 chipset based on 7nm process. To make use of this processing power, the Galaxy Fold is served with 12GB of RAM and a 512GB of onboard storage based on a fast UFS 3.0. There’s no microSD slot for the Fold though, so this might continue to do so with its future iterations.
Now the cameras on the new Galaxy Fold is unique. Actually there are a total of 6 cameras on the new handset. One is at the front just above the cover display and 3 camera on the back as the main camera module. When unfolded, the handset also has a dual lens system at the above right corner on its 7.3-inch display that sits there as a side display notch.
The Galaxy Fold comes with two embedded batteries in it with a total of 4380 mAh capacity. It supports fast charging both with wired and wireless routes.
Out of the box, the new Galaxy Fold is driven by Android 9 Pie with Samsung’s One UI on top and comes with features unique for the new form-factor. Samsung had collaborated with Google and Android developers to make what Samsung calls it as App Continuity. This feature allows users to view what’s on the external screen be expanded into the larger display when the device is unfolded.
Samsung demoed this feature with the Google Map. After the app launched from the external screen, when the Galaxy Fold was opened, the Maps instantly shows into the larger screen, expanded and in full view right where the user has left from the smaller external display.

With its large folding display, the handset can handle and open 3 apps at once and the first apps to support this feature are WhatsApp, Microsoft Office, YouTube Premium and Chrome.

The new Samsung Galaxy Fold is unique and most certainly will appeal users but Samsung’s asking price of $1,980 in the US and €2,000 in Europe when it launch on the 26th of February in the US and on March 06 in Europe might turn off some supposedly early adopters.
