Philippine Fuel Prices Expected to Surge as Middle East Tensions Escalate

As tensions in the Middle East continue to escalate with increased bombings, the global oil market is feeling the pressure. Just recently, Iran reportedly targeted oil tankers in the Strait of Hormuz, a key shipping route for global oil supplies. This development is now sending shockwaves across international fuel markets, including the Philippines.

The United States has launched what it calls Operation Epic Fury, which began more than a week ago. As the operation moves into its third week, economic concerns are starting to surface as global fuel prices continue to rise. Countries across Southeast Asia are already experiencing the effects, with the Philippines among the most vulnerable due to its reliance on imported fuel.

The recent attack on oil tankers in the Strait of Hormuz has heightened fears of supply disruptions. As a result, the oil market is preparing for another significant price hike next week. Industry experts believe oil companies may once again implement the price increases in tranches, spreading the adjustments across several days.

Current estimates from industry observers suggest the following potential price adjustments:

  • Diesel: Expected to increase by 20 to 22 Pesos per liter
  • Gasoline: Expected to increase by 14 to 16 Pesos per liter
  • Kerosene: Expected to increase by 7 to 9 Pesos per liter

Kerosene saw the biggest increase in the previous week, and while its projected hike for next week is smaller compared to diesel and gasoline, it will still add to the growing burden on consumers.

Oil companies in the Philippines are reportedly adjusting their pricing schedules differently this time. However, most price changes are still expected to take effect starting Tuesday, which is the traditional schedule for fuel price adjustments in the country.

With global tensions showing little sign of easing, analysts warn that fuel prices could remain volatile in the coming weeks, potentially affecting transportation costs, food prices, and the broader Philippine economy.
