OnePlus 8 series unveiled: High refresh rate display, 48 Megapixel Main camera
As promised, OnePlus brought the new OnePlus 8 series just under $1,000 for its top-end variant. Like its predecessor, the new 8 series will be available in two main variants: regular OnePlus 8 and a OnePlus 8 Pro.

With the OnePlus 8 series, the company dropped both the pop-up and waterdrop notch for the Selfie camera with both main variants opting to a punch hole display which by the way in our opinion is less intrusive and even cost less to manufacture than a pop-up camera.

The Pro version has the largest display for a OnePlus device to date with its 6.78-inch Fluid AMOLED display with QHD+ resolution. It sport a 120Hz display refresh rate with 240Hz touch sampling rate for more responsive and lesser lags. Its display is a 10-bit panel and comes with HDR10+ support with HDR Boost that enhances 8-bit contents and MEMC that can interpolate 24fps video to 120fps.

Together with the superbly large display, the OnePlus 8 Pro features a punch hole display for the front-facing camera which is 16 Megapixel Sony IMX471 sensor with Fixed Focus f/2.45 Aperture lens and features Electronic Image Stabilization (EIS).
On the back, the main camera sensor features 48 Megapixel cameras, a Sony IMX689 sensors with one having a f/1.78 Aperture 7P lens. Natively, its pixel size is at 1.12µm and 2.24µm binned and features omni-directional autofocus. It also features both EIS and Optical Image Stabilization (OIS).

The second 48 Megapixel sensor sits on a Ultra Wide Angle lens and has a f/2.2 Aperture with 128-degree field of view. Besides that, it also doubles as a macro camera which can take photos as close as 3 cm in distance.
The third camera is an 8 Megapixel sensor with a Telephoto lens with f/2.44 aperture and has OIS. Then there’s a fourth sensor in the mix and it’s an all-new Color Filter camera and it will be responsible on rendering various color effects.
The OnePlus 8 Pro is powered by no other than the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 chipset that is paired to a fast LPDDR5 RAM and UFS 3.0 storage. The new device is configured in 8GB/128GB and 12GB/256GB of RAM/Storage combo with no storage expansion option.
Keeping it lit is a 4,510 mAh embedded battery with Warp Charge 30T Fast charging support and 30W wireless charging.

The new smartphone device comes with 5G connectivity as standard and also supports backward compatibility with LTE, 3G and GSM connections. It also features the new WiFi 6, Bluetooth 5.1, NFC and GPS Positioning.

The new OnePlus 8 Pro will be available in Ultramarine Blue, Glacial Green and Onyx Black color options. The price for 8GB/128GB variant is set at $899 while its 12GB/256GB model is priced at $999.

If bigger is not your cup of tea then the regular OnePlus 8 will fit better. It has a smaller 6.55-inch display and along that smaller display is also a lower resolution at 1080p and only sport a 90Hz refresh rate. However, it still supports HDR+ which offers the same color accuracy as the Pro variant. It also features a punch hole display which that houses the 16 Megapixel front-facing camera.

On the back, the OnePlus 8 features a triple camera system with a 48 Megapixel primary camera using an older Sony IMX586 sensor with a f/1.75 6P lens and has EIS and OIS.

There’s a 16 Megapixel sensor that sits on an f/2.2 Aperture Ultra Wide lens and a Macro shooter at 2 Megapixel with an f/2.4 Aperture lens.

Like its Pro sibling, the regular OnePlus 8 is powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 chipset and offers the same 8GB/128GB and 12GB/256GB of RAM and Storage configurations. The downside of it is that the regular variant uses an older LPDDR4X RAM module which is a lag behind the new LPDDR5 in terms of performance.

As for the battery, the OnePlus 8 comes with 4300 mAh embedded battery and supports Warp Charge 30T fast charging. What’s missing though is the Wireless charging that is only available on the Pro.
5G connectivity on the OnePlus 8 is already a standard feature as well as WiFi 6. A welcome addition to its connectivity features for faster network speeds.

The regular OnePlus 8 will be available in Interstella Glow, Glacial Green and a standard Onyx Black color option with a Verizon exclusive Polar Silver color. The Price of the handset is at $700 for the 8GB/128GB version while its 12GB/256GB variant is priced at $800.
The OnePlus 8 and the bigger OnePlus 8 Pro will be one of the new options we’ll have in the new few months. Aside from what we’ve already mentioned, a few more features makes these new devices worth getting are in-display fingerprint sensor, Dual Stereo speakers with Dolby Atmos support, better haptic feedback, better gaming experience and in the case of OnePlus 8 Pro, the device is now IP68 certified for water and dust resistance.

And the best thing of it all is OnePlus own OxygenOS that offers vanilla Android experience with a ton of added features and optimization that makes everything work as it should be.
