Microsoft rolls out Lumia Cyan update, comes with Windows Phone 8.1

After months of waiting, Microsoft finally delivers one of the major updates for exclusive for Lumia devices. The Lumia Cyan update rolled out last Tuesday and Microsoft has been seeding the new update all around the globe.

The Lumia Cyan update does not only brought to itself the usual bug fixes and other new Lumia device specific features but also the most anticipated update to the Windows Phone ecosystem the Windows Phone 8.1 OS. The standard Lumia updates plus the new Windows Phone 8.1 brings out new features and functionality to the Operating System that we start to love. Over the course of updates, the Windows Phone OS finally made itself a worthy platform to start with. The new features introduced in WP 8.1 really made existing and upcoming Windows Phone devices as a must have daily driver for users.

The new Lumia Cyan update features the new Windows Phone 8.1 and Lumia features update to make all supported Nokia Lumia devices more personal and more functional.


Windows Phone 8.1 adds new functionality to the familiar Windows Phone/Metro User Interface. It added a third column on the Start screen which gives more room for making apps upfront. The new Action Center works as all in one notification center for message alerts, email and social network status, system notifications and notifications from apps. Under the hood, Windows Phone 8.1 offers bug fixes, stability enhancements and system optimization and extensive hardware support.

Wi-Fi Sense – automatically connects your devices to available free Wi-Fi hotspots and automatically fills-in all required data to connect to a hotspot. It will also share information to your selected contacts/friends to allow them to connect on Wi-Fi with your own password, WP 8.1 only shares your connection details but not your password for security.

Data Sense – monitors with real-time update on the number of data sent and received from your current wireless connection. This will help in situations where wireless Data supplement is limited.

Storage Sense – take control and monitor your device’s storage status, check remaining storage memory and view get details on what uses your memory and how they are being used. For devices with memory expansion, you can also select where to store your photos, apps, videos and other datas that needs to be stored on your device.

Windows Phone 8.1 now features an enhanced keyboard as Word Flow, this simple but intuitive on-screen keyboard that predicts and select words made from swiping across the keyboard area of the screen, it features auto correction and the system will learn your most common used phrases to help the word suggestions more efficient.

Currently available in the US, Windows Phone 8.1 most graced feature “Cortana” kicks in to assist your needs, from making calls, send text messages, open apps, change settings and personalize your device, Cortana is there to give a hand. Cortana will be more helpful as she learn about you, your interest and daily routines. Cortana can even set an Alarm for you, reminds you for any appointments that you may have, it’s as if you have an organizer and assistant in one but she will always be there to assist as soon as you needed it.

Internet explorer 11 for Windows Phone 8.1 also received performance tweaks to enhance and make your browsing experience more engaging, Native calendar has been updated, it tracks your appointments and even the weather.

To continue Nokia’s tradition to include new functionalities and optimized system performance when a new updates rolls out, the Lumia Cyan brings improvements to the Nokia Camera with better post processing and faster performance and it also includes Creative Studio and Nokia Storyteller to the table.

Nokia Camera is undoubtedly the much have app on any supported Lumia device and with Lumia Cyan, the camera boosts full-resolution zoom ing functionally, reframing and a one touch image editor with Creative Studio 6 that can be launched straight from the enhanced Camera Roll for quick photo editing. Creative Studio 6 includes filters and other imaging enhancements for creative and unique photos. Nokia Storyteller brings captured images and videos into a timeline view of all captured moments with the ability to share your contents to your favorite social networking site.


Other features related to the new Lumia Cyan update are hardware based, for budget friendly device Lumia 520, Lumia 525, the Lumia 620 and Lumia 720, if you happen to have a local HERE drive, the system will automatically upgrade your HERE drive app to a global HERE drive+. For the latest flagships the Lumia 1520 and Lumia ICON, the Cyan update brings enhancements to image and video captures, True-to-Life sound recordings on videos with Nokia Rich Recording and Dolby Digital Plus 5.1 sound.
