There is no doubt that slate/tablet devices is eating up some major market shares in which personal computers are known to dominate years ago. As these devices are becoming more common as popularized by Apple’s iPad and hundreds of variation of Android tablets, Microsoft is set to battle for supremacy in the tablet sector with its own Surface line of devices.
As the Surface 2 was just announced 8 months ago, Microsoft is set to unveil yet another Surface device as they send out invites for a closed-door press gathering concerning a Surface related event on the 20th of May with a tagline “Join us for a small gathering.” Though this may just plainly mean another Surface launch event, there are rumors that aired since two years ago that Microsoft is said to be working on a smaller version of the Surface tablet with a display size of around 7.5-inch with Qualcomm chip inside and is running Microsoft’s Windows 8 RT OS.
If the rumors are true, then we might be able to see a mini version of the Surface tablet that’s more handheld and light-weight. Though it won’t be running legacy Windows 32/64 bit apps, it will be a lot cheaper and far more affordable that the existing Surface devices in the market today. With the existing limitations imposed by the RT version of the OS, Microsoft should have something to offer for such device if they intended to market the Windows RT OS as a better alternative to other more established OS within the ARM architecture and similar environment.
Rumors also suggests that the alleged Surface mini is set to compete with the Apple iPad and bares almost the same display resolution with an aspect ratio of 4.3 that the iPad currently supports. Though this rumors are not confirmed by Microsoft, the tech community hopes that Microsoft would bring out the device into fruition and with that in mind, Microsoft may fuel more competition from Apple and other similar Android devices in the market that should bring out more improved tablet technologies that would greatly benefit the market.
