Following the death of a 10-year-old girl who allegedly participated in a “Blackout” challenge, Italy through its Data Protection Authority (DPA) has blocked TikTok for users whose age cannot be verified.
Various challenges have plagued the social networks recently and have risen more recently during this pandemic. While there are social networks where such activity is being done, it is TikTok that took most of the credits for these short video clips and are being shared through other social network channels as well.
One of the problems that the DPA found on these apps and service is that fact that kids who are underaged can easily signup using a fake birth date and this forms the basis for the Italian DPA to accuse TikTok of violating the Italian law that requires parents consent for kids under the age of 14 when signing up on any social networking sites.
According to a TikTok spokesperson, the company values safety as its absolute priority and that the social media network doesn’t allow any content that “encourages, promotes or glorifies” dangerous behavior.
The block is to last until February 15 and TikTok is expected to meet the DPA’s demands before then.
