HTC steps up into the game of action cams as they announced the new HTC RE on Wednesday. This has been HTC’s first attempt to step into this segment which is dominated by GoPro at this point. But HTC is determined to go head-to-head with the giant as they introduced a radical and handy way for users to use their own action cam. At first glance, you’ll mistakenly think that the device is a periscope, a pipe or something which definitely no your typical camera or whatsoever unless you get you hands on one of this little action cam.
Coming in White, Teal, Navy Blue and Red, the HTC RE is equipped with a 16 Megapixel 146° wide-angle lens with Image Stabilization software in a periscope shape waterproof design. The RE does not feature any power button and the only way to activate the device is when being pick up by users. Users can take photos from the device by tapping the camera button on top of the device where the thumb rests or long-press the button to start video recording, additionally by pressing the second button situated just below the camera front of the body will activate slow-motion video recording.
The HTC RE supports both Android and iOS where users can view all their contents from the RE directly to either Android or iOS devices viia Wi-Fi, RE can even use devices from either platforms as a view finder since the RE doesn’t have a built-in display on its own.
RE can take full-HD 1080p videos at 30 fps or a 720p slow-motion videos at 120 fps. The device can last for about an hour and 40 minutes of continuous video recording or up to 1200 still images in it needs to be plugged in to recharge its 820 mAh battery. It also comes with 8GB microSD card and could support cards of up to 128 GB.
The new HTC RE is priced at $199 and will be available later this month with HTC releasing a separate accessories for the new devices which includes a strap for attachment, a handlebar and an additional case for further waterproofing.
