Google announced the new Pixel 5 and Pixel 4a 5G with Qualcomm Snapdragon 765G

When rumors started about the Pixel 5, things weren’t really getting along with users and fans especially the camera module that it supposed to have. Thankfully that was in the past and the official Pixel 5 just got officially announced by Google and it was a sigh of relief.

The Pixel 5 is expected not to become available in the Philippines unless you know where to order them, but that doesn’t mean we are not following Google’s steps on this one.

Pixel 5

It was such a nice thing to see that Google is sticking with the usual design cues and they are refining it in some way or the other, I supposed.

One thing you’ll notice is that the fingerprint sensor is back to the Pixel series and it is literally at the back of the device. Unlike most other flagship device out there who includes an under-display biometric sensor, Google is bringing back the sensor from its roots, is that a bad thing? Hmm… No really, I find them, somehow ergonomically placed.

The Pixel 5 comes with a recycled aluminum body and is built around a 6.0-inch OLED screen and with the fifth iteration, Google has omitted a larger version of it, so for the Pixel 5, a 6.0-inch display is your only way to go. It features an Always-on display, HDR10+ and a 90Hz refresh rate with a Gorilla Glass protective layer on top.

Google has mastered its imaging algorithm for the Pixel phones that it didn’t bother to include higher megapixel sensors on the specs sheet. Instead, it uses a tried and tested 12 Megapixel sensor as its primary camera coupled to a wide angle lens. There also a secondary sensor of 16 Megapixel and has an Ultra Wide lens.

You’ll notice that Google has put aside the Telephoto lens on this one and I think this will be a drawback for most users. Nevertheless, Google still has zooming features back into the camera for the Pixel 5 and the primary sensor with a 1.4um pixel size will take care of it together with Google’s AI algorithms.

The new Pixel 5’s camera features OIS and a bright f/1.7 aperture lens while the secondary sensor has an f/2.2 aperture lens. It also supports 4K video recording at 60fps, a feature that is first for the Pixel series of phones.

On the front side, the Google Pixel 5 settles with an 8 Megapixel sensor for all your Selfie photos and videos.

One of the biggest changes in Google Pixel 5 is the choice of processor it comes with, gone are the higher-end chips and instead, Google opted for a Qualcomm Snapdragon 765G. SD765G comes with 5G modem built-in and so it makes the new Pixel 5 5G ready. You also get 8GB of RAM and a fixed 128GB of storage.

The Pixel 5 comes with 4,080 mAh battery and supports 18W fast charging. It also include an IP68 certification for water and dust resistance.

The new Google Pixel 5 will be available Sorta Sage and Just Black color variants, the handset will be available in eight selected countries starting on October 5th and on the 29th in the US. Price for the device is set at $700/€630.

Pixel 4a 5G

Besides the new Pixel 5, Google also announced the new Pixel 4a 5G. It has a much larger display than the Pixel 5 though at 6.2-inch but it only ships with 60Hz refresh rate.

What they have in common with the Pixel 5 is the chipset as it also runs on Snapdragon 765G but it only comes with 6GB of RAM while the storage sticks with 128GB.

It also comes with a 3.5mm audio jack which the Pixel 5 is missing and the fingerprint scanner is also found in the back as well.

Despite its larger footprint, the Pixel 4a 5G only comes with a 3,885 mAh battery but still supports 18W fast charging.

For imaging, the Pixel 4a 5G basically has the same hardware as the Pixel 5 which has a primary 12.2 Megapixel sensor and a 16 Megapixel Ultra Wide camera. While on the front, there’s an 8 Megapixel Selfie shooter.

Unlike the Pixel 5, the Pixel 4a 5G ditches out the IP rating which means they are not water or dust resistant and they are constructed with a polycarbonate body.

The Pixel 4a 5G will be available on October 5th in Japan and on a later date on other countries with pre-orders to be expected to commence by November 5th and will be available in store shelves by November 19th at a price of $500/€500.
