As fraudulent accounts and scams are growing with the use of social media, Facebook is pushing up measures to circumvents such activity from the platform especially with its messaging service. The company is launching a new feature on Messenger that pops up when a user receives a message from someone that might potentially scam them or if it detects potentially harmful messages.

Frauds and scams usually have a set of patterns to disrupt and preoccupies people decision making skills which allows them fell into traps and the sort. The new feature will look for these patterns and gives an alert to users who are receiving messages especially from strangers, someone impersonating or messages from adults targeting minors.

The alert (similar to the photo above) will teach individuals under 18 years old to be cautious when messaging adult people they do not know and help them take appropriate actions before responding to a message.

The same mechanism is applied to scams where messages can look to good to be true and potentially baits unaware victims. Scammers could take money from users, persuade them to do something that potentially could result to a huge loss. That can also be said true to fakers and impersonators where Facebook will also look for message patterns that could trick anyone into thinking that they are talking to someone they know.

Facebook uses AI technologies to detect these patterns and looks at users’ overall behavior rather than the contents of their messages. It will also move forward to make messages encrypted eventually for the safety and security of users that users their platform.
