Diamond in the Sky: Astronomers discovered a white dwarf believed to be the dimmest and the coldest ever detected
A team of Astronomers has discovered an object 900 light years away from earth near the constellation of Aquarius. The object is believed to be a white draft of approximately 11 billion years old and maybe as old as the Milky Way galaxy. What’s more interesting here is that according to scientific data, the white dwarf star is the coldest yet discovered at about 2,700º C (4,900º F) which has crystallized its carbon forming what scientist believe an Earth-sized diamond in the vastness of space.
David Kaplan and his team found the distant object using the National Radio Astronomy Observatory’s (NRAO), Green Bank Telescope (GBT) and Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) and other observatories through its Pulsar companion dubbed PSR J2222-0137 which was the first object to be detected using the GBT by Jason Boyle and the by a student from West Virginia University in Morgantown.
The object was then observed for a two-year period using the VLBA by Adam Deller at the Netherlands Institute for Radio Astronomy (ASTRON) which pinpointed the exact location of the object and calculated its distance from Earth. White dwarfs exists across the space and there are objects that may exhibit similar characteristics as what Astronomers have found recently, so this objects are not theoretically uncommon but their faint brightness makes them harder to detect.
