With slow internet connection (at least for basic accounts) in the Philippines, the country is looking forward for other companies to compete with major internet firms to drive service innovations. Philippines already have a few internet service providers including PLDT, Globe Telecom, Sky, Converge and other small firms.

A new internet service is garnering momentum in the West and that is the new Starlink service from Elon Musk SpaceX which primarily feature a satellite-based broadband internet service. Rumors suggests that the service is about to enter the Philippine market with advance talks already in motion particular between Starlink and the Philippines Converge.

The rumor has been confirmed by the Daily Inquirer recently and that a few government officials are already aware of the possible entry of Starlink in the country.

With internet speed between 50mbps to 150mbps, the service sounds promising, however Senator Grace Poe is concerned about the cost of setting up the receiver which is about 25 thousand and that average Filipinos just couldn’t afford such. The partnership of Converge and Starlink provider SpaceX leaves a bright hope for a much more affordable service in the country.
