Chip Designer ARM cuts ties with Huawei

With Google cutting off Huawei’s access to Android may sound upsetting primarily due to the latest US commerce regulations against Huawei but the latest report of ARM cutting ties with Huawei is even more serious.

The US government has just lifted the trade ban on Huawei temporarily for 90 days but despite the recent developments, Chip designer ARM a UK-based firm and owned by Japanese SoftBank group is reportedly sending out memos to employees to cut “all active contracts, support entitlements, and any pending engagements” to Huawei because of its “US origin technology” in ARM’s designs.

ARM stated that the company’s recent move has to do with “complying with all of the latest regulations set forth by the US government”. The chip designer develops some processor designs in Austin, Texas and San Jose, California in the US and that affected them directly from the restrictions set forth by the US government.

Huawei primarily relies on ARM architecture when designing its in-house chip HiSilicon Kirin processor and without ARM’s license to manufacture any of its processor this will be a huge blow for Huawei.
