Asus Zenfones are known to be cheap, highly affordable devices with comparable specs from other well known brands in the market. At International CES 2015 held in Las Vegas, the computer manufacturer and now mobile phone maker is introducing a device that seems to take the throne from the likes of Samsung, Sony and Nokia (now Microsoft) as these companies mentioned all brought out a considerable highly advance imaging technologies incorporated to their smartphone devices which Asus is now aiming their crosshairs at.
From the physical aspect, the new Asus Zenfone Zoom takes a cue from the Nokia Lumia 1020 as it comes with a little round bump on the back which houses the main camera module. But unlike the Nokia Lumia 1020, Asus has opted to get a standard dual LED flash instead of the Xenon found in Lumia 1020. The biggest advantage of the new Zenfone Zoom however is that it’s got a 3X optical zoom lens which makes high quality and clearer distant photos when compared with images from devices in digital zoom only.
As the main highlight of the device, the Zenfone Zoom comes with a 13 Megapixel main camera with 10-element lens, 3x Optical zoom and is coupled with a dual-color real tone LED flash. It also features an Optical Image Stabilization (OIS), laser auto-focus and with up to 12x digital zoom to get more from your distant subjects. On the front, the Zenfone Zoom is also ready to take the beating of your selfie needs as it comes with a large 5 Megapixel camera sensor with wide-angle lens and a selfie panorama. The front camera also makes way to a more refined video quality which is ideal for video calls over the internet.
The device has a metal frame with the front dominated by the 5.5-inch 1080p display and is protected by a protective layer presumably Gorilla Glass. The overall outlook of the device upfront is from that of a typical Zenfone 2 until you hold them in your hands. It’s just got the premium feel all over the price which is just as the handset is considerably more pricier than the regular Zenfone 2’s.
Under the hood, the Zenfone Zoom is also a powerhouse as it is equipped with Quad-core Intel Atom Z3580 chipset running at 2.3 GHz, a PowerVRG6430 graphics processor and with either 2 GB or 4 GB of RAM, there’s also a number of storage options to choose from which starts at 16 GB up to 128 GB of internal storage,. Users can also expand their existing storage space when needed with micro-SD cards.
For connectivity, the handset comes in a dual-SIM setup and supports 4G LTE connectivity in addition to the usual 3G, HSPA+ and GSM wireless network support. Other connectivity options includes: Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n/ac and Bluetooth 4.0, GPS with GLONASS and A-GPS support, micro-USB 2.0 with OTG capabilities.
The new Zenfone Zoom will also run the new Asus ZenUI on top of Android 5.0 Lollipop which means that users will be able to enjoy the latest offering and features from Android including the new card deck style recent apps list or the overhauled new dropdown notification and settings menu.
The handset is not that thin considering the camera module that it contains but at least it only stays at 11.95mm and only weighs around 185 grams including the 3000 mAh Li-po battery which powers the whole device.
The Asus Zenfone Zoom is expected to arrived on the second quarter of 2015 with an estimated price of $399 or roughly 18,000+ in the Philippines before duties and taxes. When available, users can choose from either Meteorite Black or the Glacier White color option along with the choice of RAM and a wide range of storage space capacities.
