If you’re an Apple fan, you’ve probably heard the company’s upcoming tool to deter Child Sexual Abuse Material (CSAM). The new tool is a Child safety feature that will scan multimedia contents on the iPhone and compatible Apple devices for any Sexual explicit content and images and that will be available with the release of iOS 15, WatchOS 8 and the upcoming MacOS Monterey that is set to release later this year. According to Apple, the new child safety feature will be implemented on the Messages, Photos and Siri to start with.
The Messages app will have a new notifications to warn children or their parents when they send or received sexual explicit photos or some child inappropriate image and immediately blur out the image while displaying a warning message. Besides the new notification, Parents are also notified in case their children decides to go ahead and open the image or attempts to send similar explicit images.
For Photos, Apple have developed a new tool that will detect if someone is uploading multimedia contents to the iCloud that involves children in sexually explicit acts. The technology could then notify the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) that will then alert the law enforcement agencies in the US.
While privacy becomes a major concern for this new tracking tool from Apple. The company claims that the method of detecting known CSAM is designed with user privacy in mind.
For Siri and the built-in search interface on iOS and MacOS, the technology directs users to child safety resources. Apple also plans to update Siri to cut in when someone tries to engage on CSAM-related searches with a message explaining that the interest in the topic is harmful and problematic and offer users with resources that could help with the issue.
The new technology is rolling out in the US but Apple could later introduce this system to other regions.
