Apple is all out for speed and their 2020 smartphone models are all equipped with 5G wireless support with the new iPhone 12 series. Apple released the widest range yet with a total of four new devices: iPhone 12 Pro Max, iPhone 12 Pro, the iPhone 12 and the iPhone 12 Mini.

The new iPhone 12 series is design and built is reminiscent to the iPad Pro and the familiar design of the iPhone 4 with a flattened sides. All four models comes with an OLED panel, however, they are all running at 60Hz refresh rate by the way and it would take another year for Apple to include such feature on their devices.

The display is protected by Ceramic glass which Apple claims to be 6 times more tougher than regular smartphone glass. And as expected, you’d still get the notch and everything in it across all models.

Driving the new iPhone 12 is the latest iOS 14 and is powered by the new Apple A14 Bionic chipset, the iPhone 12 is celebrated to deliver up to 80% faster machine learning than its predecessor and support up to 11 trillion operations per second. With the new chipset, the iPhone 12 is said to feature a faster Face Unlock and camera operations.

For safety, the new iPhone 12 series comes with IP68 rating for water resistance and can submerge to about 6 meters for an hour without a problem, this is up by 2 meters from the iPhone 11 series.

iPhone 12 Pro Max + iPhone 12 Pro

We’d say, these two are Apple’s top of the line device for 2020 with the iPhone 12 Pro Max being largest of the four. The iPhone 12 Pro Max is built around a 6.7-inch display, the largest display on any iPhone while the iPhone 12 Pro comes with a 6.1-inch screen.

The new devices comes with 3 main cameras and contrary to the Megapixel wars on Android devices, Apple is sticking with 12 Megapixels and instead improves them a bit more.

The primary camera comes with a 1.7 µm pixels sensor which collects more light, and includes a bright f/1.6 Aperture 5-Element lens. For stabilization, the iPhone 12 Pro Max opted for sensor-based OIS instead of relying on moving optics, the iPhone 12 Pro also comes with OIS but carried over the iPhone 11 Pro implementation.

Their Telephoto camera has a 52mm Focal length with the Pro Max zooming at 2.5x while the Pro at 2x. The Ultra Wide camera remains the same from the iPhone 11 series.

What’s new for the two iPhone 12 Pro’s is Apple’s new LiDar system and this enables the camera to autofocus in the dark 6 times more efficient.

The iPhone 12 Pro and the iPhone 12 Pro Max will be available in Silver, Graphite, Gold, Pacific Blue color variants with storage configuration are as follows: 128GB, 256GB and 512GB.

iPhone 12 + iPhone 12 mini

If you want an iPhone that just works without the bells and whistles then the vanilla iPhone 12 or even the iPhone 12 mini got you covered.

The iPhone 12 is built around a 6.1-inch display but what’s more appealing to them is the bezel to body ratio which is a bit thinner than the previous version. The iPhone 12 mini on the other hand comes with a 5.4-inch display, perfect for those with small hands. The mini version also reminds us that Apple is actually listening to its customers, if you’d remember, there was a call for Apple to produce a smaller iPhone and the iPhone 12 mini just made that possible.

The camera system for both of these two models are basically the same with dual camera modules. They get a 12 Megapixel primary sensor and another 12 Megapixel with Ultra Wide angle lens.

The new iPhone 12 and the iPhone 12 mini will be available in these color variants: Black, White, RED , Green, and Blue. Storage starts at 64GB and up to 256GB.

Everything else…

The four variants of the new iPhone 12 comes with MagSafe – A feature familiar with MacBook is finally coming to the iPhone and what it does is facilitate its wireless charging functions up to 15W. Besides charging, MagSafe also support a wide range of accessories to support the feature.

Apart from wireless charging, the new iPhone 12 also support up 20W fast wired charging but for the first time ever on any smartphone device, the iPhone 12 is the first not to include a charging adaptor inside the box.

While there is no charging brick included, it’s got a USB-C to Lightning cable though, however that doesn’t seem to offer much of help either as the only existing compatible charger for such a cable is the one for the iPhone 11, Lucky are those who have any iPhone 11 around and for everyone else, that means a separate purchase for a compatible charging brick.
