After months of closed developer testing, Google has finally named their next generation Android 6.0 operating system as Marshmallow with a welcoming Android carrying a marshmallow mascot at Android’s headquarters in California .

Unveiled last May this year at Google IO event, Android 6.0 was then codenamed M and has been available to developers for app testing and bug identification. After Android 5.0 Lollipop and its succeeding updates, Google is now turning its focus on Android 6.0 which carries most of the elements both in its UI and core features. Android 6.0 optimizes the Android system even further to improve performance, enhanced memory management, intelligent RAM utilization, better battery consumption with overall improvements during standby and optimized power management.

With Android 6.0, Google is introducing native support for fingerprint sensor and secure authentication, support for the latest USB Type-C bidirectional connectors and how Android devices charge other devices. Also expect more optimized user interface with further improvements in Material design, there would also be a new app permission manager as well.

Google recently rolled out Android 6.0 SDK together with a final release preview of Android M before they go RTM.  The third and final preview of Android M is currently available on Nexus 5, Nexus 6, Nexus 9 and the Nexus Player.

Android 6.0 Marshmallow will launch together with the upcoming Nexus handset this fall and will touch other compatible Nexus devices soon after.
