Air Pollution and Lung Cancer: New Evidence Reveals Hidden Risks for Non-Smokers

Air pollution is a compelling topic, as it significantly influences how we interact with and respond to our surroundings. Its effects go beyond what we can see, extending down to the cellular level. While smoking is commonly associated with lung cancer, recent research suggests that it’s not the only cause.

Studies now show that several other factors can contribute to lung cancer, even among non-smokers. One standout factor is air pollution.

A team of researchers studied lung cancer samples from 871 patients who had never smoked. These individuals lived in regions with varying levels of air pollution, including areas in Africa, Asia, Europe, and North America. To uncover patterns in genetic mutations, researchers employed whole genome sequencing to identify mutational signatures, a distinct markers that indicate exposure to harmful chemicals and pollutants.

By comparing these genetic markers with pollution data gathered from satellites and local monitoring stations, the researchers discovered a strong correlation: non-smokers who were exposed to higher levels of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) had a higher frequency of genetic mutations in their lung tumors.

Even more striking is that these mutations were not random. The study found a notable rise in driver mutations, mutations that directly fuel cancer cell growth. Alarmingly, some of the same genetic signatures typically found in smokers were also present, and in some cases, even more pronounced in people exposed to severe air pollution.

These findings deepen our understanding of how air pollution impacts human health. Unfortunately, many people especially those living in densely populated urban areas are constantly exposed to polluted air, regardless of where they go. However, experts continue to explore solutions to mitigate air pollution, and public awareness of these risks plays a critical role in improving our living environments.
