What if you could have yourself a concept phone which could drive your daily needs, a concept phone for the future built in our time. What if you could have that phone today? would you like having one?
Xiaomi introduces a next generation smartphone built entirely outside of the usual practices, a concept smartphone which the company bravely mass-produced for customers: Meet the new Xiaomi Mi MIX. like Xiaomi likes the quote it; the X marks the spot and that spot hasn’t been touched by anyone or anything ever and Xiaomi open the doors for possibilities.
Though we have previously seen a similar concept from other manufacturers, the new Mi MIX is an all new borderless concept design from Xiaomi and unlike any other smartphone in the market, this one is almost completely built entirely of ceramic. It has a 6.4-inch screen with 91.3% screen-to-body ratio with nearly borderless design and rounded corners. Though someone thought of a pure borderless handset, usability issues seems to limit us from reaching that far but from all other designs in the past, Xiaomi just made the concept more functional with well-balanced design.
Like we’ve said earlier, the Mi MIX has a 6.4-inch display and yes it is, it’s pretty large of a handset for the users view but compared to the iPhone 7 Plus, they should be at about the same dimension from all sides understandably because the bezels are gone. The display, well it isn’t anything of a regular display as a concept phone, mostly things are custom-made and with this, as the display comes into the highlight of the concept is custom-built with a 17:9 aspect ratio.
The only bezel one will notice is found at the bottom of the handset and this houses the front speaker and the front-facing camera. The Mi MIX will be Xiaomi’s first device to not include any buttons at the bottom so everything is handled through the display with on-screencontrols.
With the display to dominate almost entirely the front of the device, Xiaomi had to reimagined a few things along the way. Xiaomi engineers had to repositioned the front-facing camera which now sits at the bottom, the earpiece and proximity sensors – an essential part on any smartphone had to be reengineered. With the Mi MIX, the traditional earpiece has been replaced with a piezoelectric ceramic driver while InfraRed based proximity sensor is replaced byultrasonic proximity sensor which both works through the display itself.
So we’ve told you that the Mi MIX is made entirely of ceramic material and it’s almost a 100% true, minus the other components made from other materials but the body itself from front to back including its frame, power button and its volume rocker is made out of ceramics. Instead of using glues and plastics, the design usesmortise and tenon joint to put the frame and the display together.
The Mi MIX is a radical imagination of the smartphone but does it has the power to take things seriously besides design and aesthetics? With Qualcomm Snapdragon 821 SoC on board, the handset is expected to be just as capable as any Android flagship phones in the market today. It comes with two variants in two different configurations: For a 4GB RAM model, users will have a 128GB of internal storage space while a second variant with 6GB of RAM will include a hefty 256GB of internal storage. Both variant doesn’t include memory expansion but that amount of storage won’t be filled out anytime soon by common users.
For imaging, the Mi MIX includes a 16 Megapixel main camera sensor with Phase Detection Autofocus, 4K video recording with Electronic Image Stabilization on 3-Axis gyroscope similar to the Mi Note 2 and Dual-tone LED flash. The front camera comes with 5 Megapixel sensor and had to be custom built to fit into its place with 50% smaller that a typical front-facing camera yet comes with the same amount of features and with the same performance.
For Connectivity, the handset has all there is for a smartphone devices including dual-SIM support with both ports supporting 4G/LTE connectivity. Other connectivity featuresare in including: Wi-Fi 802.11ac, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.2, NFC, USB Type-C port.
The Xiaomi Mi MIX runs on the latest MIUI 8, a proprietary interface from Xiaomi based on Android 6.0 (Marshmallow) and it kept its light on from a large 4,400 mAh embedded battery with Qualcomm Quick Charge 3.0 support.
With this radical new concept design, Xiaomi partners withPhilippe Starck – a world-renowned designer to create the industrial design of the Mi MIX. Starck focuses on simplistic design to achieve beauty in detail. With thewhole concept itself is already premium, Xiaomi pushes further by having the an 18Kgold rims on the Camera and fingerprint sensor of its 256GB variant.
The Xiaomi Mi MIX will be available in a single color variant which is black, an elegant choice of color for such an elegant design. Prices starts at CNY 3,499 ($515) for the 4GB/128GB version while the premium 6GB/256GB variant goes for about RMB 3,999 ($590) with both variant to come with a special leather case.
