Sony Xperia XZ Premium
When Sony had their Xperia XZ flagship device last year, it comes with underwhelming specs that’s not even comparable to most flagship devices of 2016 in the same price range. While Sony had its own sets of optimizations and features with their devices, they are just not quite there to compete optimally. But as we go forward this year, Sony will finally bring back what makes Sony flagship devices unique and will eventually give justice on Sony’s pricing schemes.
In the next few months, Sony will be launching their true Xperia flagship the Xperia XZ Premium. As the name suggests, the new flagship is give the highest level of premium treatment front the design up to the specs. This will be the first true flagship devices that Sony unveiled since the Xperia Z5 Premium almost one and a half year ago.
With Xperia XZ Premium, Sony brings back its 4K resolution display to smartphone devices with 4K HDR support making it as the first mobile device to support such display feature on its 5.5-inch screen. It was introduced first in Sony Bravia TV’s and having it on mobile devices ensures an immersive and quality viewing experience with amazing colors, contrast and superior clarity. Like most Sony smartphone devices, it also features Triluminos Display which has been improved and comes with 40% more brightness than that of the Xperia Z Premium.
The handset will have its launch delayed that’s because Sony will be using Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 835 which as you might have guess, has an initial exclusivity with Samsung at launch. The device comes with 4GB of RAM and 64GB UFS expandable storage with microSD card support of up to 256GB. It will boot Android 7.1 (Nougat) which puts the handset inline with all the latest and greatest mobile devices to date.
What really is more captivating with the latest Xperia XZ’s is Sony’s Motion Eye camera technology, you might also have heard the name before as it reigns on Sony laptops,The main camera is a 19 Megapixel 1/2.3 Exmor RS sensor with 1.22um Pixel Pitch. Its biggest selling point is its new Super slow-mo video capture at 960fps to capture every bit of details as things went through, but just to remind you though, Super Slow-mo is only available in HD 720p. Nonetheless, it’s a good thing that it’s there and if you are worried about the image quality, you shouldn’t be as it comes with Electronic Image Stabilization, Triple image sensing technology,Predictive Hybrid Autofocus and Anti-distortion shutter.
As you’ll expect, it takes normal videos from the lowest resolution available and up to 4K videos at 30fps and then to keep everything still, there is Sony’s SteadyShot with Intelligent Active Mode feature with 5-axis electronic image stabilization. Other key imaging features includes:ISO levels for photos at 12800 and 4000 for videos, there’s and HDR mode, 22mm Wide-angle Sony G-Lens with F/2.0 Aperture and an 8x digital zoom. Front-facing camera shouldn’t also be missed as well, as it comes with a 13 Megapixel 1/3.06 Exmor RS sensor with 22mm Wide-angle lens for Selfies and groupies and it too has SteadyShot features.
The new Xperia XZ Premium is maintained by a 3230 mAh non-removable battery with Qnovo Adaptive Charging for longer battery life and supports Qualcomm Quick Charge 3.0 through USB-C. The handset is wrapped from front to back with Corning Gorilla Glass 5 and sure it does look premium all over with its frame all in metal with IP68 Certification for water and dust resistance. With these kind of materials joining together, the Xperiz XZ Premium has a dimension of 156 x 77 x 7.9 mm and is considerably heavy at 195 grams for a 5.5-inch device.
Other features of the handset includes a choice of single or dual SIM options, fingerprint sensor for security which is mounted on the power button and standard connectivity features with 4G LTE support and the Xperia XZ Premium will be one of the first few devices in the market to support the latest Bluetooth 5.0 technology.
The Xperia XZ Premium is expected towards the end of the second quarter and will be available in Luminous Chrome and Deepsea Black color options. As for the price, Sony is yet to discussed the pricing of the new handset but hinted that it will vary from region to region. With the kind of specs the XZ Premium has, one must expect a heavier price tag along the way.
Sony Xperia XZs
If you want some of the best features from the Xperia XZ Premium yet a little tight on a budget or you want to get a little more compact device with superb imaging capabilities. The new Xperia XZs will be on one for you. Basically it’s the Xperia XZ with bumped-up RAM and has the same Motion Eye camera technology as the Premium variant.
Coming straight from the Xperia XZ, the XZs variant has the same 5.2-inch IPS Triluminos display with full-HD 1080p resolutions. It is powered by Snapdragon 820 Chipset accompanied by 4GB of RAM and has a storage space of either 32GB or 64GB with microSD card support of up to 256GB.
Imaging is what the Xperia XZs the most prominent feature. The Motion Eye camera is a 19 Megapixel Exmor RS sensor with Hybrid AF,Triple image sensing technology and Super Slow Motion capture at 960fps in 720p. Like the XZ Premium, the XZs variant includes at the goodies has on Motion Eye camera with brilliant looking photos and videos.
For the front, a 13 Megapixel 1/ 3.06 Exmor RS sensor lies at the top of the handset and features a 22mm Wide-angle lens. This one comes straight from the tried and tested Selfie camera from the Xperia XZ. It is also one of the best Selfie camera there is on a smartphone device with ISO level of 6400 for Photos while it max’s at 1600 for Video.
It also boots Android 7.1 out of the box and it comes with a 2900 mAh embedded Li-Ion battery pack with Stamina mode enabled for greater power management, Qnovo Adaptive Charging for prolong battery life and Qualcomm Quick Charge 3.0 as well on USB-C.
Unlike the Xperia XZ Premium, the Xperia XZs only has a Corning Gorilla Glass from with the frame and back in metal. This handset is also IP68 certified so it could go underwater of up to 1.5 meters in 30 minutes. with this certification, it is also dust resistant as well so it ensures protection all over.
The handset will be coming to the market in April and will be available in Ice Blue, Black and Warm Silver color options. Prices will be announced shortly and as always, Sony tells us that pricing for the Xperia XZs will be region dependent and with its specs, expect them to go around the same price-point as the existing Xperia XZ.
