With Microsoft’s new Windows 10 S, the company also unveils a new Surface device to accompany the new operating system. The new Surface Laptop is the newest and slickest laptop ever released by Microsoft, we thought that Microsoft will leave the conventional laptop market but here we are with the latest full-size laptop with all the Surface design, aesthetics and features around.
It comes with a unique hinge design signifying that this one isn’t a detachable laptop-tablet hybrid of some sort. The Surface team had gone focusing with the design of the device which they are able to hide the hinges including other parts like holes and screws along the way, that gives you a very pleasing, smooth and plainly light Surface device with all the power of Windows 10 right in your hand.
With Windows 10 S being designed for schools, the new Surface Laptop is also seen on that direction but anyone can purchase the new laptop for their personal intentions however, it should be noted that Windows 10 S is pretty much a locked-down version of Windows 10 Pro and that Apps are primarily and exclusively obtained from Windows Store (At least for now). Microsoft had been battling for Malware and viruses for years, and taking notice from Apple and Google with their MacBooks and ChromeBooks respectively where there is a closed and controlled environment of apps, there’s that kind of security that were present from these devices that Microsoft had to follow.
The Surface Laptop is a 13.5-inch PixelSense touchscreen device with a 3:2 aspect ratio designed for maximum productivity for a display this size. It also supports the Surface Pen which you could do much about anything just like in any Surface device. The keyboard is well laid-out with an ergonomic distance between them for maximum typing comfort and productivity. The surrounding surface of the keyboard is covered by a cloth-like material known as Alcantara.
There are two configurations of the new Surface Laptop, customers may choose between a Core i5 or a beastly Core i7 configuration. For graphics, all Core i5 variants is driven by an Intel HD Graphics 620 while all Core i7 models will include an Intel Iris Plus Graphics 640 designed for working with photos, videos and other graphics intensive apps including games. As for the RAM and storage, Core i5 variants comes with either 4GB/128GB or 8GB/256GB configurations while for the Core i7 units, there’s an 8GB/256GB variant with the top of the line having a 16GB/512GB of RAM and storage configurations, all of them are SSD-type storages.
At Microsoft EDU event, Microsoft’s Surface head, Panos Panay said that the Core i5 variant of the Surface Laptop is 50 percent faster than the new Core i7 Apple Macbook Air while staying thin and light, if that’s the case, just imagine what a Core i7 means. It comes with a reliable power pack which gives at least 14.5 hours of battery life and with Windows 10 S’s improved power management, expect an optimum stamina for the Surface Laptop.
Other features will include 1 USB-3.0 port, a mini DisplayPort and a proprietary Surface port, the speaker for the laptop is strategically embedded into the keyboard surface. The device measures 14.5 mm at its thickest point, mainly the one with the hinges on the back while its thinnest point just measures 9.5mm. It weighs just around 1.25kg (2.76lbs) and will be available in Platinum, Burgundy, Cobalt Blue and Graphite Gold colors.
The new Surface Laptop will be available for purchase this June and you can pre-order the device today with a price that starts at $999 for the base Core i5 model having 4GB/128GB configuration while the top of the line Core i7 variant will set you back for $2,200.
